The Walt Disney Company inducted several influential figures into its Disney Legends program at a ceremony during this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. The event recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to Disney’s brands and franchises across movies, television, and theme parks.
Angela Bassett was one of the legends honored for her long history with Disney projects. Bassett has starred in films for Disney-owned studios like Touchstone Pictures and Marvel Studios, including roles in “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler introduced Bassett, who reflected on her journey in the industry.
Acclaimed director James Cameron received an award for his work on the blockbuster “Avatar” franchise and documentaries for National Geographic. Zoe Saldana, star of the “Avatar” films, presented the award to Cameron with humor and appreciation. Saldana thanked Cameron for challenging her as an actress.
Other inductees included television host Kelly Ripa, known for co-hosting “Live with Kelly and Ryan” on ABC. Ripa’s friend and co-host Ryan Seacrest inducted her, and she jokingly ribbed Seacrest in her acceptance speech. The ceremony also recognized the contributions of actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford, and Miley Cyrus to Disney.
Previous Disney Legends include artists like Oprah Winfrey, Stan Lee, and Christina Aguilera who have significantly shaped Disney’s brands. This year’s class reflects Disney’s diverse portfolio across film, television, music, and theme parks. The event looked back on Disney storytelling’s lasting impact while also promising future innovations from new legends.
