Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal underwent intense physical preparation for their roles in the highly-anticipated Ridley Scott film “Gladiator 2.” Mescal, known for “Normal People” and “Aftersun,” spoke about co-star Pascal’s surprising fighting abilities in an interview with Empire magazine.
Despite recent online jokes poking fun at a scene in the trailer where Pascal’s character drops his sword, Mescal said Pascal is an impressive fighter. “He’s deceptive,” Mescal stated. “Pedro is funny but he’s also really strong. There’s a fierce side to him that might not be obvious at first.”
Both Mescal and Pascal worked diligently to transform their bodies for battle scenes in the epic sequel. “We trained very hard for a long time,” Mescal noted. “It was important for the film that we look realistic fighting as gladiators.” Though confident in his own skills, Mescal said confronting Pascal on screen will be unpredictable.
Fan anticipation has been rising since “Gladiator 2” was announced, promising epic battle sequences using modern technology. Mescal thinks facing Pascal will be challenging but said doing so will finally answer ongoing online speculation sparked by a short trailer moment.
Denzel Washington also joins the all-star cast for the Ridley Scott directed film. Hitting theaters November 22, 2024, “Gladiator 2” looks to cement its place as one of the year’s most anticipated releases. Audiences will see if Mescal’s faith in Pascal’s abilities matches the forceful fighter glimpsed in training.
