The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 vampire novel “Salem’s Lot” is scheduled to premiere this October exclusively on the streaming platform Max. Directed by Gary Dauberman, known for his work on “Annabelle Comes Home,” the film has overcome multiple production challenges to reach its release.
Originally announced in 2019 for a theatrical release, production of the film was first delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Further financial cutbacks by the studio raised concerns that Salem’s Lot might be cancelled. However, Max has now taken over distribution and will debut the adaptation on its streaming service this fall.
The story follows writer Ben Mears, played by Lewis Pullman, who returns to his childhood hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine seeking inspiration. There, he discovers the sinister presence of Kurt Barlow, an ancient vampire portrayed as slowly transforming residents into the undead. Mears must work with a group of allies to confront this growing horror before it consumes the entire town.
Stephen King himself praised the new take on his classic tale, describing it as “old-school horror filmmaking with a slow build and big payoff.” The cast includes recognizable names like Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, and Bill Camp as Matthew Burke. Other roles feature Spencer Treat Clark, Pilou Asbæk, and John Benjamin Hickey as Father Callahan.
Salem’s Lot comes from Atomic Monster Productions, known for horror content like The Conjuring series. This is the latest film adaptation of King’s novel, following a 1979 TV miniseries and a 2004 TNT remake. Max has shared new images from the film to generate excitement ahead of its October premiere date, which is still to be announced. Fans can expect an eerie atmosphere and standout performances reflective of King’s terrifying source material.
