Did you ever get lost for hours in a vibrant fantasy world as a kid, not wanting the adventure to end? Tomba! Special Edition invites players both new and nostalgic back into one of those magical realms. This PlayStation classic charmed many with its quirky characters, charming visuals, and catchy music. Now, thanks to Limited Run Games and their Carbon Engine, Tomba’s world lives on for modern audiences.

The original Tomba! was released in 1997 to critical acclaim. Players guided the pink-haired Tomba through a sprawling world full of unusual quests and hidden secrets. With a memorable soundtrack and imaginative setting, it cast its spell on many young adventurers. Though the game sold modestly, it left a lasting impression. Over 20 years later, Limited Run aims to share this experience with new generations while honoring what made the original special.

Rather than remake or remaster the title, Tomba! Special Edition transports players directly back to 1997. The vintage graphics, locales, and score remain faithfully preserved. Special Edition simply updates some quality of life features, like unlimited saving and a rewind tool, for convenience. Beyond the game itself, it also includes behind-the-scenes interviews and artwork galleries, shining light on the creation of Tomba’s world.

By staying true to the essence of the original, Special Edition promises to recapture the heart and humor that endeared Tomba! to its legion of lifelong fans. It offers a chance to rediscover—or unveil for the first time—a charming slice of PlayStation history that deserves wider appreciation. Get set to immerse yourself once more in Tomba’s magical adventure.

Exploring Tomba’s Colorful World

Tomba!’s story centers around a young cave boy named Tomba who finds his idyllic life in the forest disrupted by invading pigs. One day, while defending the local wildlife, Tomba is knocked out and has his prized bracelet stolen. With this memento from his grandfather now in the pigs’ possession, Tomba embarks on an adventure to retrieve it.

His quest will take him across a diverse array of environments, each with their own style and secrets to uncover. From grassy plains and sunny beaches to eerie forests and a spooky mansion, Tomba’s world oozes charm and atmosphere. Dotted throughout are quirky animal villages filled with characters in need of aid. Whether it’s tracking down a lost pup or obtaining cheese for a hungry elder, helping others rewards Tomba with new skills and clues.

Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return Special Edition…

Of course, standing in Tomba’s way are the villainous pigs who’ve overrun the land. Led by their king, the portly porkers use magic to plague each region with different curses until Tomba lifts them. From skeletal pigs to hulking brutes, there’s a pig type for every occasion. But perhaps none cause as much trouble as the Angry Pig—an impish rascal who flees at the first signs of a scuffle. Chasing after this pig provides some of the game’s biggest puzzles and surprises.

While the plot is simple, Tomba’s world really comes to life through exploration. Scouring each zone yields new items, clothing upgrades, and unlockable pathways. Between grappling hooks, bombs, and other tools, very few obstacles can stop Tomba for long. Revisiting areas grows them in exciting ways. Often, completing one task will reveal a new use for an object or an alternative route through familiar terrain. This gives Tomba’s adventure a real sense of unfolding discovery.

Mastering Tomba’s Tricks

Ever since first playing as the cave boy Tomba all those years ago, his unique abilities have always stuck with me. While the basics of jumping and throwing enemies are easy to pick up, Tomba’s full movelist takes real skill to wield.

Tomba! Special Edition Review

A major part of Tomba’s platforming revolves around grabbing. He can latch onto distant platforms, vines, or even foes themselves. With a quick button press, Tomba can then fling objects or launch himself upward. It opens up new strategic options—you might swing from vine to vine or use a pig as a projectile! Of course, the trade-off is that one missed grab means a long fall.

Beyond grabbing, Tomba learns tools that further expand his moves. The boomerang stuns groups, while the grappling hook pulls off daring maneuvers. I’ll never forget using it to swing into a far-off area, only barely holding on with my fingers! These give Tomba’s levels a real sense of verticality.

Of course, difficulty rises with all the new possibilities. Platforms flip or move under your feet, forcing quick decision-making. Later zones mix the foreground and background, so slipping off the edge can mean plummeting down or up through the floor. It makes even simple jumps feel nervewracking.

Progress isn’t just about skill, though. As with any RPG, experience points aid your quest. Completing objectives levels Tomba up, letting him survive deadly attacks or reach higher ground. It’s satisfying to feel yourself growing stronger alongside the character.

Equipment boosts are another incentive to fully explore Tomba’s world. Finding special costumes allows climbing walls or even summoning aid, changing how stages play out. It really pays to search every nook.

Between all these advancing moves, clever level designs, and character growth systems, Tomba presents a continual challenge that remains fresh through every revisit. While some jumps still catch me out after all these years, finally mastering Tomba’s full arsenal is its own reward.

Reflections in a New Light

While the developers aimed to faithfully recreate Tomba!’s world, does its visual presentation still sing after all these years? Well, those pre-rendered characters and backgrounds remain just as charming as ever. Sure, their low resolution makes each pixel plainly visible, but that adds to the game’s nostalgic charm.

Tomba! Special Edition Review

Thankfully, options let you view the visuals through different lenses. The default brings things close to the original, while a CRT filter simulates the blear of vintage tube displays. I preferred the cleaner, modern look, but either works. What struck me most though was how Tomba!’s style endures, focusing on whimsy over realism even now.

Of course, some concessions had to be made to reality. Those loading times between areas, while short, yank you from the action more than I recalled. And while the remixed soundtrack soars, those janky cutscenes fall flat next to games both old and new. Yet neither weighs the experience down—some charms just don’t translate perfectly across eras.

Overall, Limited Run struck an admirable balance here. Tomba! retains its unique visual identity, while options ensure it looks its best for today. The package seamlessly blends nostalgia and modern comforts. Some seams inevitably show, yes, but its heart of fun platforming, adventure, and novelty beats as vibrantly as ever. Perhaps that’s the truest kind of longevity a classic can ask for.

Revisiting an Old Favorite

Limited Run really spared no effort enhancing Tomba! Special Edition. Chief among the additions are the saves and rewind, which completely transform the experience. Back in the day, if you hit a tough jump or ran out of time, you might have to replay a large chunk again. Now, there’s no stress—rewind a few seconds or save anywhere. It means truly relaxing into that smooth yet challenging gameplay without fear of frustration.

Tomba! Special Edition Review

And the presentation options let you find the perfect view. I liked a softened 4:3 for that real retro charm. But the new arrangements in widescreen were impressive too. Harumi Fujita’s re-recorded soundtrack simply shines in either mode. Her passion comes through in every note of those bouncing tunes.

Maybe most rewarding though is delving into the museum. Getting a glimpse behind-the-scenes brought Tomba! to life in a whole new way. Fun concepts and character sketches show its wild imagination. But what stands out are the revealing interviews. Hearing Fujiwara’s vision and Fujita’s dedication left me with immense respect. Their thoughts confirmed what always drew me in—Tomba!’s heart.

Even after all these years, its cheery adventure endures because of that heart. Limited Run ensured both long-time fans and new players could experience it without frustration through these upgrades. But more than that, they’ve preserved a true piece of gaming history and shown its continued relevance. Revisiting Tomba! with these added insights after two decades reminded me why some worlds we never want to leave behind.

Everlasting Adventure

This Tombi just keeps on giving! While the main quest wraps up nicely in 7 hours, there’s so much more game here if you want it. Speedrunners are always finding new tricks, but my favorite way is uncovering every secret. Each area holds surprises, like a hidden treasure or tough enemy awaiting a rematch.

Tomba! Special Edition Review

And the memorable moments—they really stay with you. Who could forget the psychedelic trip through Piggy Land? Or scaling that cliff, just to spot a curious creature staring back. My personal favorite has to be swimming through the seas, where peace gives way to panic as you flee some massive beast.

Best of all is straying from the beaten path. Helping every NPC brings its own little tale, even if some tasks seem silly. Who knew brushing a cat could lead to beating a boss? And just when I thought I knew the map back to front, another passageway revealed lands untouched. It’s moments like finding that hidden kingdom that made all the exploring worthwhile.

Nothing beats firing Tombi up for a few more adventures down memory lane. The heart and soul of a classic really do ensure it stands the test of time. Whether you’re speeding to the end or lingering in each nook and cranny, there’s enjoyment to be had however you choose to play. For me, I’ll keep diving into this world, always finding new surprises in familiar places.

Legacy Lives On

Tombi’s adventure has stood the test of time, and Limited Run’s Special Edition ensures this quirky classic can delight new fans. While parts feel dated, the heart of the game remains—unique puzzles, a charming world full of personality, and platforming that surprises at every turn. Special Edition preserves the magic expertly through careful emulation and quality of life tweaks.

Tomba! Special Edition Review

Saving anywhere and rewinding saves frustration on tricky jumps. The rearranged soundtrack breathes new life into memorable tunes. And the museum reveals the passion behind Tombi’s creation, letting us feel more connected to its history. It’s easy to see why this title left such a lasting impression.

For those seeking retro platforming charm, Tombi delivers a memorable experience. Its experimental ideas paved new ground, even if execution is uneven. Special Edition triumphs in its preservation goals, revitalizing a game in danger of being lost. Whether you’re revisiting old adventures or braving the jungle for the first time, Tombi’s quirky world continues to delight generations later.

My recommendation? Dive into the Special Edition digitally and discover this forgotten gem. Experience puzzles both intriguing and head-scratching. Laugh at peculiar characters and admire recreated vistas of a bygone era. Tombi’s legacy lives on through dedicated fans, ensuring its story can be experienced anew. It proves some classics are timeless, and their magic is well worth preserving.

The Review

Tomba! Special Edition

7 Score

Tombi remains a unique gem of the 32-bit era that deserves rediscovery. While some puzzles are convoluted and control can feel floaty, its experimental ideas and oddball characters give the game enduring charm. Limited Run's Special Edition is a loving preservation that makes Tombi's journey accessible to newcomers without compromising the original experience. As a key title from a talented studio lost too soon, Tombi! proves some classics are worthy of resurrection.

PROS

  • Charismatic characters and unique style give it lasting appeal.
  • Experimentation with 2.5D platforming introduced innovative concepts.
  • Careful preservation work by Limited Run makes it accessible for new fans.

CONS

  • Some puzzles and objectives lack clear explanations.

  • Control and collision detection feel outdated compared to modern standards.
