Mexican actors Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna will star together in an upcoming boxing series coming to Hulu. Titled “La Máquina,” the six-episode drama tells the story of boxer Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna and his manager Andy Lujan. García Bernal plays Osuna, an aging fighter trying to make a comeback after a big loss. Luna takes the role of Lujan, Osuna’s friend who is helping orchestrate his return to the ring.
The series takes viewers inside the high-intensity world of boxing. It follows Osuna as he deals with struggles both in and out of the ring. As his career winds down, Osuna must make tough choices about his final fight. Pressure grows from many sides, including a criminal group demanding he throw the match.
Beyond the sports storyline, Luna said the series aims “to talk about issues that matter.” It will offer broader commentary on their world and society. Underlying the boxing plot is a “nefarious organization” linked to Osuna’s ex-wife’s journalism. Her investigations into this criminal element endanger her own life.
“La Máquina” debuts on Hulu October 9, 2024 as the streaming service’s first Spanish-language original. The trailer features the characters against J. Balvin’s “Mi Gente.” Emmy-winning producer Marco Ramirez serves as showrunner, bringing experience from hits like “Daredevil” and “Fear the Walking Dead.” Acclaimed supporting actors include Eiza González, Jorge Perugorría, and Lucía Méndez.
For García Bernal, the role follows his work in last year’s wrestling film “Cassandro.” He and Luna expressed excitement to collaborate again on a project addressing important issues through the lens of combat sports. Between its action, personal drama, and commentary, “La Máquina” aims to attract both boxing and TV drama fans when it premieres later this year.
