Mel Eslyn’s show Penelope tells the story of a teenage girl seeking escape in the woods. Created for Netflix, the series follows 16-year-old Penelope as she leaves her family camping trip behind and strikes out alone into the natural world.

Penelope lives an ordinary life until she has an experience during a silent disco that changes something inside her. As she wanders away from the other campers, she feels a strong pull into the surrounding forest. From there, Penelope embarks on a journey of self-discovery as she navigates life on her own terms, disconnected from technology and the expectations of others.

Through quietly expressive performances and breathtaking scenery, the show immerses viewers in Penelope’s experience. We feel her sense of wonder at new places and people while also understanding the anxieties of her situation. Eslyn’s direction transports us alongside Penelope to see what she discovers about herself along the way.

This review will look at how the pilot establishes Penelope’s character and the themes of nature versus modern life. It will discuss the creative approach to visuals and storytelling that draws us into Penelope’s world. By analyzing specific episodes and scenes, it aims to provide a comprehensive picture of both the strengths and limitations of this journey into the natural world.

Penelope’s Path into Nature

The pilot episode introduces us to Penelope as she joins her family for a camping trip. But it soon becomes clear she feels removed from the other campers enjoying the silent disco. When a wolf crosses her view, Penelope seems transfixed. Later, she goes on a hike and simply keeps walking, suddenly gripped by a need to immerse herself in nature.

Arriving in town, Penelope stocks up on supplies in preparation. Realizing her money is connected to her phone, she cleverly purchases a gift card to become unseen. With a bag of gear, Penelope turns off her phone’s tracking and boards a moving train, reveling in the newfound thrill of independence.

Joy turns to concern as Penelope ignores her parents’ messages. She records an audio note thanking them but insisting they respect her journey alone. After disembarking, she finds guidance in a wilderness survival book.

Now headed into a national park, Penelope hopes to camp without the requisite permit. A ranger informs her of the rules, but she remains resolved. That evening, an open mic introduces her to a traveling musician, Austin, who sees something kindred in Penelope’s quest.

The next day, Austin kindly drops Penelope near the park, where she prepares to embrace the solitude of nature. Though unfamiliar terrain lies ahead, this first phase of her adventure awakens Penelope’s spirit and curiosity to discover who she might become in the wild.

Mel Eslyn’s Journey into the Natural World

Director Mel Eslyn brings the viewer directly into Penelope’s experience. Authentically filming on location in the Pacific Northwest, every scene immerses us in lush forests and sweeping landscapes. Through Penelope’s eyes, we feel the raw beauty of nature.

Penelope Review

Eslyn’s cinematography places us right alongside the curious protagonist. Shots mimic Penelope’s wandering perspective as she discovers new areas. We peer over her shoulder at critters in the trees or supplies in stores just as she does. This invites us to truly see the world renewing itself through her fresh lenses.

Inviting lightness defines the visual palette. Greens burst with vibrancy, and skies radiate hopeful clarity. Even dreary weather feels cleansing. Eslyn’s color choices make the outside appealing, as if nature waits with open arms to heal Penelope within its embrace.

Nature scenes exude pure wonder. Dew glimmers on ferns like scattered jewels. Dappled trails wind mystifyingly ahead. Breezes rustle leaves in lulling melodies. Through these vignettes, Eslyn awakens our own dormant senses and transports us into living fully present outdoors.

The ethereal score soothes with wordless voices and acoustic twangs. It swells during train rides or adventures, amplifying moments of triumph. When melodies swell, we celebrate Penelope’s successes right alongside her. Music energizes her voyage and reflects inner growth beautifully.

By prioritizing breathtaking landscapes, Eslyn invites us to emotionally invest in Penelope without fearing for her safety. Her deft touches romanticize nature just as it might feel to a teen rediscovering herself there. Eslyn crafts an escape for all into life’s simplest pleasures through Penelope’s journey.

Peeling Back the Layers of Penelope

Megan Stott imbues Penelope with quiet complexity. Underneath her whimsical spirit lies an inner search barely understood by herself. Stott conveys it all with intricate subtlety, leaving room for the character to evolve onscreen.

Penelope Review

From the first moment, Penelope seems swept up in nature’s magic. Yet Stott ensures we glimpse curiosity driving her adventure as much as any will-o’-the-wisp. Her wide eyes drink in each new discovery, while calculating fingertips suggest unlocking life’s secrets piece by piece.

Stott grants nuance to Penelope’s naivete. A finger grazed across her smile hints at knowing innocence, but furrowed focus shows her processing each trial independently. We watch her awaken to resilience within, guided more by instinct than skills. Stott balances dreaminess with dawning self-possession.

Like McCandless in Into the Wild, Penelope pursues her own freedom with childlike wonder. But where he rejected society, Penelope simply follows nature’s calling within. Stott imbues her with refreshing optimism—a girl exploring her place, not running from the past.

Subtle shifts in Stott’s performance track Penelope’s psychological journey alongside the physical. Initially subdued smiles bloom more radiant as she comes to trust her capabilities. Confidence stiffens her spine until self-assurance carries her forward, strong yet supple as the wilderness’ young saplings.

Stott grants us window into Penelope’s soul throughout its unfolding. Her guileless portrait invites reflecting on our own paths’ detours toward finding home within ourselves, somewhere in life’s beautifully bewildering landscapes.

Penelope’s Journey Inwards

The show subtly explores Penelope reconnecting with nature versus today’s technology-driven world. Throughout busy daily life, had she forgotten the simple beauty of unfettered countryside? Now trees generously share their embraces instead of phones demanding constant attention.

Penelope Review

Seeking truer versions of ourselves underneath societal facades, many feel unease bubbling underneath outward successes. For uncertain reasons, Penelope feels this dissonance, wishing to strip back life’s layers and know her authentic core. Through risky adventure, she discovers courage and resilience she never knew rested within.

Her escape offers temporary solace from expectations surrounding career and relationships. But does she face demons lurking beyond picturesque vistas? Or merely thrive experiencing each moment rather than hurriedly progressing to next checkpoints? Without clear psychological burdens, perhaps Penelope simply yearns for intimate closeness with nature and clearer sights of her path.

No preachy sermons or problems plague this idealized journey. Still, Eslyn understands life’s beauty and darkness intimately intertwine. Will realities penetrate Penelope’s fantasies as resilience sustains her in nature’s honest harmony? Has she space to understand herself or merely flees society’s ill-fitting roles? By series’ end, will she accept life’s complexities or prematurely return to external comforts?

Penelope’s Journey Episode to Episode

Each segment carries Penelope further along her path of discovery. Early episodes capture her sense of wanderlust and reconnect us to nature’s simple gifts. Here visuals shine, immersing us in forests and streams alongside our curious protagonist.

As Penelope faces harsher realities, the tone shifts. Strong installments focus on character, watching her learn resilience by failing and prevailing through each obstacle alone. We see hard-won confidence putting down roots within her once she decides to truly confront her journey’s purpose.

Not all episodes maintain this balance. Some burden the dreamy premise with overwrought melodrama. Contrived confrontations with hostile strangers prove weakest when realism challenges the premise. The best episodes prioritize Stott’s inward performance over a convoluted external plot.

The penultimate episode highlights Eslyn’s mastery, its climactic moments earning full investment in Penelope’s transformation. But the finale spreads resolution too thin, leaving threads for speculation instead of closure. While satisfying on its own terms, this open-ended quality may frustrate those craving definitive answers.

Overall, the series accomplishes transmitting wanderlust for connecting to nature and our deepest selves. Even imperfect episodes remain watchable thanks to Stott’s encompassing work. She gifts staying power to Penelope’s journey of self-rediscovery through changing scenery.

Penelope’s Path Resonates

Mel Eslyn’s venture into the woods with Penelope highlights both the show’s strengths and room for growth. Stott offers a captivating lead who carries each episode forward. Nature scenes feel inspiring.

Areas like rushed finales or superficial side characters create missed opportunities. But the core of Penelope tapping into youthful curiosity feels genuine. Her journey honors self-discovery through life’s unpredictable changes.

While not perfect, Penelope shows potential to spark wanderlust in other souls seeking simplicity. Free-spirited dreamers may find pieces of themselves in this young traveler embracing life’s spontaneity.

Eslyn succeeds more in gentle character work than complex plotlines. But the beauty remains in tiny moments of appreciation for life lived fully present. Penelope resonates through quiet reflections on growth within, away from life’s noise.

Ultimately, this glimpse into one girl’s rediscovery of wonder hanging in nature’s balance feels worth the time. Streaming the journey offers chances to see unseen beauty in everyday surroundings and to better understand lives unlike our own.
