Streaming service Disney+ Hotstar is developing a local version of the American television show “Monk” for Indian viewers. This marks the first South Asian adaptation of the beloved detective comedy series, which originally aired in the United States from 2002 to 2009.
The Indian remake stems from an agreement between production companies Banijay Asia and NBCUniversal Formats. Their partnership aims to bring popular American shows to India through localized adaptations. “Monk” will be the first result of this collaboration coming to Disney+ Hotstar.
Sumanta Bose, head of content for Disney+ Hotstar’s Hindi platform, said “Monk” was “an exciting fit” for its mix of humor, mystery and emotional depth. Bose stated the adaptation has been crafted to feel rooted in Indian culture while still offering fans, new and old, a fresh experience.
The original “Monk” followed Adrian Monk, a detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder, as he helped the San Francisco police solve unusual cases. Its blend of humor, mystery and compelling main character earned the show widespread popularity and critical praise. Actor Tony Shalhoub’s role as Monk won him multiple awards.
Deepak Dhar, founder and CEO of production companies Banijay Asia and Endemol Shine India, noted the high standards set by the original series. Dhar said their adaptation aims to similarly resonate with audiences. He also commented that production is progressing smoothly so far.
While Turkey has adapted “Monk” before, this marks the first remake in South Asia – showing the format’s global appeal. The deal also leaves room for possible Indian versions of other NBCUniversal shows like “Suits,” “House,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Top Chef” in the future.
