Actress Sydney Sweeney has undergone a significant physical change as she prepares to play the lead role of boxing champion Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. Sweeney shared photos on social media showing off her transformed look and the intense training required for the part.
In the photos posted to Instagram, Sweeney looks almost unrecognizable with dark brown, curly hair instead of her usual blonde style. Her muscular physique is also on display, especially in her toned arms, evidence of the strenuous preparation.
“For the past few months, I’ve immersed myself in boxing training to portray the story of Christy Martin,” Sweeney wrote. She said it’s an honor to play such a resilient and strong woman who fought both in and out of the ring. Martin’s journey shows the power of perseverance.
The untitled biopic is directed by David Michôd. It will follow the life of Christy Martin, one of the top female boxers in the 1990s. Martin started boxing in 1989 and competed for over 20 years. She made history as the only woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated for her success in the ring.
However, Martin’s story extends beyond her sporting achievements. In 2010, she survived a brutal domestic assault by her then-husband Jim Martin. Despite being stabbed and shot, Christy managed to escape and flag down help. Her assailant later received a 25-year prison sentence for attempted murder.
Sweeney revealed to Deadline that her past experience with grappling and kickboxing is helping in her new boxing training. Reports say Martin herself offered to coach Sweeney, though it’s unclear if the actress accepted.
