Warner Bros Discovery Taps Veteran Exec to Revive Nordic Content Strategy

Media Giant Signals Return to Original Programming with Strategic Appointment

Warner Bros Discovery redefines its Nordic media strategy by naming Allan Sperling as the region’s new Group Vice President of Programming, Networks, and Streaming. The strategic decision reflects the company’s renewed commitment to local content production in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.

Sperling will take on the role on December 2nd, bringing over 20 years of worldwide media expertise. After holding key positions at Showmax, MultiChoice, and Viacom, he will manage content strategy from Stockholm beginning in January.

The appointment occurs at a critical time for the company. After reducing original productions in the Nordics in 2022, Warner Bros Discovery appears to be poised to re-enter the scripted content market. According to an inside source, Sperling’s employment will “open the door to more scripted originals” in the region.

Christina Sulebakk, EVP and Managing Director at WBD Nordics, praised Sperling’s potential influence. “His profound expertise and international leadership experience will be invaluable as we drive growth and innovation across our Nordic operations,” said the woman.

Sperling, who formerly served as Executive Vice President of Content at Showmax, expressed delight in his new role. “I’m committed to delivering exceptional content and innovative programming that resonates with Nordic audiences,” he told me. During his stint at Showmax, he was instrumental in the development of noteworthy productions like the series DAM.

The executive’s hiring coincides with larger regional developments. Just days before Sperling’s employment, the Danish government established a production incentive system worth 125 million krone ($17.5 million) to encourage increased television and film production.

Sperling’s extensive career, which includes leadership posts in London, Amsterdam, and South Africa, uniquely qualifies him to manage the difficult Nordic media business. His appointment comes after recent organizational changes, such as Graham Lafferty’s promotion to leadership in the UK & Ireland team.

As Warner Bros Discovery attempts to revitalize its content strategy, all eyes are on Sperling to spearhead the company’s Nordic development and local content production initiatives.
