The story begins in a small riverside town called Sumisora, nestled amongst green hills and azure skies. It is here that Junya Mizumoto calls home—a hardworking student spending his days studying and helping out at the family store. Like any young man, Junya dreams of what lies beyond the horizon. But a shadow hangs over him, forever changing his boyhood adventures into a search for answers.

Just over a year ago, Junya and his beloved older brother Takaya embarked on a routine errand that turned tragic. On that fateful afternoon, Takaya was killed in a car accident, leaving Junya to shoulder the guilt of being the sole survivor. Now, as Junya assists the locals with repairs and renovations, his gentle spirit seeks closure. Little does he know, his work will soon stir buried secrets that challenge all he thought he knew.

When a mysterious girl named Azusa lashes out at Junya, accusing him of trying to replace his late brother, long-buried emotions come flooding back. Azusa holds clues to Takaya’s final days, keeping Junya determined to unravel the truth.

And as new friends enter his life, each bearing scars of their own, Junya discovers he is not the only one in need of healing. Through acts of service and sympathy, this unassuming young man finds redemption—and awakens to life’s enduring promise of love beneath Sumisora’s starry sky.

Sumisora’s Secret Circle

The small riverside town of Sumisora sets the stage for Junya Mizumoto’s journey of discovery. Still grieving the tragic death of his beloved older brother Takaya, Junya works to support their family while studying away at university. But when a mysterious girl’s outburst reopens old wounds, Junya resolves to uncover the truth behind Takaya’s final days.

His search intertwines with several young women, each bearing secrets of their own. Bubbly exchange student Chunyu recruits Junya’s help searching for a treasured family heirloom. Naive idol Yuriko struggles with reviving her passion under pressure. Childhood friend Chihaya endeavors to preserve her heritage against her father’s ambitions. Stubborn Hinata challenges bonds of loyalty while demanding independence. Enigmatic Azusa holds tantalizing clues—if only her icy visage would thaw.

Subtle hints suggest connections between these circles, yet each lady lifts Junya in her own way. Chunyu’s cheer lifts his spirits, while Yuriko’s spirit rekindles through his support. Chihaya clings to nostalgia just as Junya does, finding solace in one another. Hinata’s fire and fragile care remind Junya it’s empowering to lean on others. And though Azusa remains distant, Junya sees in her his own pain and perseveres to understand.

Throughout, Junya finds comfort in spirited little sister Misora and friend Aino, wishing for Aino, especially to find her brave voice. These secondary stars bring Junya joy despite their own private longings, reinforcing love’s power to heal all wounds in time, under Sumisora’s warm blue sky.

A Visual Feast

Sumisora’s tale truly comes to life through stellar presentation. Visual novels are part literature, part experience, and in both regards, SINce Memories excels.

SINce Memories: Off The Starry Sky Review

Gameplay stays true to form. Text transports the player as art brings settings and people to vivid life. Choices shape each character’s saga in subtle yet impactful ways. Navigation remains intuitive, alongside useful tools to enhance enjoyment—fast-forward, volume adjust, and more. Despite lacking bonus lore, the story alone immerses completely.

What breathtaking sights await within! Sumisora shines as a place people call home, care evident in every backdrop’s beauty. Fields and forests feel welcoming, houses full of history, and shops bustling with community spirit. Around each scenic corner awaits newfound warmth.

Captivating characters steer these scenes too. Intricate portraits grant insight beyond words alone could offer, emotions playing out across telling features. Distinct styles showcase diverse personalities, yet designs consistently charm. During key moments, extra CGs thrill with stunning stills to treasure.

But visuals alone would feel hollow without Sumisora’s soul—its soundtrack. Experienced composer Takeshi Abo lends mastery, crafting melodies meant to move hearts and haunt memories long afterward. Joy and sorrow resonate with perfect balance. Instrumentals immerse, while vocals enrapture completely. Most arresting come character themes, varying yet cohesive gems to adore.

Voice work brings characters to vivid life too. Passion fills every line, whether laughs, cries, or quiet musings. Subtle emotion shades add profound depth. Even Junya springs to vibrant life in flashbacks—proof that when passion drives all else, excellence will follow.

In SINce Memories, presentation proves more than skin deep. This visual feast engages fully, transporting all who partake to a world well worth visiting time and again.

A Story of Heights and Valleys

SINce Memories ebb and flow like Sumisora’s tides. Sparks of beauty shine through stretches that stagnate. Its strengths center on humanity, highlighting problems all young souls face when life swoops low.

SINce Memories: Off The Starry Sky Review

The common route introduces mysteries but drags establishing intrigue. Pacing lags, introducing nuanced characters deserving depth. Yet glimmers excite, like Azusa cutting Junya with a past shrouded in her eyes’ sad sheen.

Highpoints emerge exploring these souls. Junya blossoms, supporting Yuriko’s dreams, finding his own stride. Connecting with each maiden’s plight feels strikingly real.

Alas, the script stumbles. Clumsy translation and typos disrupt immersion. Technical flaws overshadow mature themes of moving on. Repeating “days passed” glosses over growth fans yearn exploring.

Still, themes soar higher than stumbles. Junya learns to accept that love and purpose lie beyond following a loving brother’s footsteps. Each girl teaches embracing life’s gifts instead of dwelling in sorrow’s shadows. Their shining supports one another to face tomorrow smiling despite yesterday’s tears.

Yet inconsistent writing and characterization leave the impact underwhelming. Complex characters simplify into archetypes, robbing depth fans deserve. Spinning predictable plots, storytelling loses what drew hearts originally.

SINce Memories touch on tragedy and tomorrow with fleeting brilliance. But an unrefined script and rushed development of its luminous ideas dim an otherwise moving tale’s lights. With polish fitting its potential, this visual novel could have been a true masterwork. As is, its beauty remains tantalizing yet ultimately unfulfilled.

Returning to Sumisora

This humble town holds wonders worth experiencing again and again. SINce Memories give players reason to revisit long after first wanderings end.

SINce Memories: Off The Starry Sky Review

Despite linear beginnings, choices start forking each maiden’s path early. Discovering clues and piecing puzzles together engross on initial visits. But multiple conclusions await, demanding replays to grasp full meanings between friends. Distinct epilogues follow neutral and best endings, respectively, joyous or bittersweet.

Memories long outlast a single visit. Tales linger in the heart, encouraging analysis with added context. Spotting foreshadowing and connecting subtly introduced threads enriches replays. Subtleties surface upon looking back with wisdom of what’s to come. Stories morph with every insight gained.

Repeating routes bonds one tighter to faces seen only briefly before. Familiarity deepens attachment where curiosity once reigned. Friends become family, pain becomes comfort, guiding another to hope when skies darken.

Welcome, newcomers and fans alike. Though games precede, SINce Memories stand alone. Strange yet intimate, complex yet invitational—it uplifts all journeying within. Novel or not, love stories transcend all. And none capture spirit so poignant and true as do those found beneath Sumisora’s stars.

Sumisora for All

Junya’s journey remains welcoming to one and all. SINce Memories strive for ease, seldom posing barriers to enjoyment.

SINce Memories: Off The Starry Sky Review

Controlling the tale proves straightforward, choices arising naturally amid unfolding scenes. Menus keep navigation tidy yet tasks simple. Adjustable text speed helps hurried or slow readers alike stay immersed.

While basic, these utilities suffice. After all, what depth visual novels offer lies not in gimmicks but in earnest experiences felt. SINce Memories understands its charming experience, not technical sheen, it holds value.

Some quibbles exist. Lacking Switch touch integration feels like a small missed opportunity for convenience. Yet even console conversion remains perfectly playable via reliable auto-read and skip functions.

Overall, nothing impedes the invitation to Sumisora. Players join hearts light or heavy, experience-strong or new, encountering only gentle guidance toward tales and feelings waiting to be discovered. Here accessibility serves story, not vice versa, welcoming all who wish, alleviating beauty’s embrace.

Junya’s journey remains welcoming to one and all. SINce Memories strives for ease, seldom posing barriers to enjoyment.

Starry Skies and Shadowed Streets

SINce Memories shines in painting portraits yet lacks polish in plot. Its radiant aesthetic and stirring soundtrack uplift even as uneven writing lets concept down. Pacing drags while characterization could captivate given time to truly develop hidden depths.

Yet within inconsistencies exist moments profoundly moving. Understanding grief’s ebb and flow through Junya and company feels profound. Their friendships’ healing power particularly resonates.

Despite flaws, this debut spreads Memories Off’s light further. Visually stunning and emotionally intelligent in parts, its very real humanity merits appreciation. While misses irritate, its many successes enchant—scenes stay long in memory, as Sumisora’s stars above.

I recommend adventurous souls willing to overlook rough spots find meaning amid beauty. Visual novel fans especially appreciate skilled craft wherever glimpsed. And all with open hearts partake in truths tender yet piercing, beneath skies and streets both starry and shadowed in turn.

The Review

SINce Memories: Off The Starry Sky

6 Score

SINce Memories emerge as a mixed yet worthwhile experience. Enchanting artistry and insightful exploration of grief's complexities hook the viewer, even as an uneven storyline and rocky localization create distance. Potential for profundity exists amid uneven execution, making this Memories Off entry a work of flashes rather than consistency.

PROS

  • Stunning visual presentation and soundtrack

  • Underdeveloped characterization and story arcs leave arcs feeling hollow.
