Two pioneering women producers received posthumous recognition at the Producers Guild of America awards, with Hollywood stars Jane Fonda and Kate Hudson celebrating their profound impact on the film industry.
Paula Weinstein and Lynda Obst were honored for their groundbreaking work in empowering women in entertainment. Fonda, who worked closely with Weinstein, shared powerful insights into the producer’s transformative career.
Fonda recalled Weinstein’s critical role in saving the film “Monster-in-Law” after a difficult test screening. “Paula totally saved it by getting Carrie Fisher to rewrite the ending,” Fonda said. Her ability to solve creative challenges became a hallmark of her professional approach.
The most touching moment came when Fonda described Weinstein’s legacy of mentorship. At Weinstein’s memorial service, nearly the entire theater stood to acknowledge her impact. “By the end, most of the theater was standing on the stage,” Fonda explained. “That was Paula, one of a kind, beloved, irreplaceable.”
Kate Hudson’s tribute to Lynda Obst highlighted the producer’s unique approach to nurturing young talent. Hudson shared a personal story from her early career on “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” when Obst invited the then 22-year-old actress to be involved in all aspects of production.
“It is rare for someone to take a 22-year-old ingenue and empower them to be a side by side leader,” Hudson remarked. She remembered a memorable moment when Obst insisted they watch the film’s audience reaction together, showing her commitment to understanding viewer experiences.
Beyond her professional achievements, Hudson emphasized Obst’s ability to balance work and family. “As women do, we discuss our work as much as we do our children,” Hudson reflected, highlighting Obst’s dedication to both her career and her family.
The tributes painted a powerful picture of two extraordinary women who not only succeeded in a challenging industry but also dedicated themselves to supporting and lifting up the next generation of female talent in Hollywood.
