Jennifer Carpenter has confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Debra Morgan in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection. The actress, who played the character in the original Dexter series and later returned in Dexter: New Blood, addressed the speculation while attending the premiere of 1923 Season 2.
“I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it,” Carpenter told People. “I hope that they’re having a wonderful time. And I’m so happy for the fans to have more to chew on.”
Carpenter originally portrayed Debra Morgan from 2006 to 2013. Her character met a tragic fate in the series finale when Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, removed her from life support following a stroke. Despite Deb’s death, Carpenter returned in New Blood as a vision that haunted Dexter’s mind. Since New Blood used this narrative device to bring her back, some fans speculated that Resurrection could do the same. Carpenter’s comments now put that possibility to rest.
While she will not be involved in the new series, Dexter: Resurrection will feature several returning cast members. Hall will once again portray Dexter Morgan, while David Zayas and James Remar will reprise their roles as Angel Batista and Harry Morgan. Jack Alcott, who played Dexter’s son Harrison in New Blood, is also set to return. Additional cast members include Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage.
The new show is one of several projects expanding the Dexter franchise. The recent prequel series Dexter: Original Sin explored Dexter’s early years, with Patrick Gibson portraying a younger version of the character while Hall provided narration. Molly Brown played a young Debra Morgan. Another upcoming prequel will focus on the Trinity Killer, the notorious antagonist from the original series.
Carpenter continues to focus on her current role in 1923, where she plays U.S. Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett. While discussing her character, she acknowledged a pattern in her career. “I don’t know why I get pulled in that direction, but it’s interesting,” she said.
A release date for Dexter: Resurrection has not yet been announced.
