Netflix is set to bring comedy fans a highly anticipated sequel to the 1996 cult classic “Happy Gilmore,” with Kym Whitley joining Adam Sandler in the upcoming film. The movie, which completed filming in December, promises to reunite fans with the beloved golf comedy while introducing new talent to the franchise.
Whitley will play Bessie, a member of Happy Gilmore’s support group, marking another collaboration between her and Sandler following their work in “Hubie Halloween.” Her addition to the cast continues her impressive comedy career, which includes roles in popular TV series like “The Parkers” and “The Neighborhood.”
The sequel boasts an impressive ensemble cast, bringing back original stars Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller. Joining them are exciting newcomers including Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, and NFL star Travis Kelce, adding fresh energy to the beloved comedy.
Behind the camera, Kyle Newacheck will direct the film, with original director Dennis Dugan serving as an executive producer. The screenplay comes from the original writing team of Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who are also producing alongside Robert Simonds and Jack Giarraputo.
Whitley brings significant comedy experience to the project. Beyond her television work, she has made her mark in animation, voicing characters in “The Boondocks” and “The Cleveland Show.” She currently performs at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas and co-hosts the NAACP Image Award-nominated podcast “Two Funny Mamas” with Sherri Shepherd.
While fans eagerly await the film’s release, Netflix has not yet announced a specific premiere date. The sequel aims to recapture the comedic magic of the original “Happy Gilmore,” which helped establish Sandler as a comedy star in the mid-1990s.
