Director Jon M. Chu is taking an innovative approach to filmmaking with the upcoming “Wicked: For Good” sequel, actively incorporating audience reactions from the first film into his creative process.
Fresh off his Critics Choice Award win for Best Director, Chu spoke candidly about the unique challenges of simultaneously editing the sequel while promoting the initial installment. “I’m living two timelines right now,” he told reporters backstage at the awards ceremony.
The director explained that fan responses are dramatically influencing the sequel’s development. “It absolutely affects everything that we’re doing,” Chu said. He noted that audience members are paying close attention to minute details, which has prompted the production team to refine their approach.
Scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, the sequel promises a broader exploration of Oz. Chu teased an expanded narrative that delves deeper into the relationship between characters Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). “Oz is bigger. It’s more expansive,” he revealed.
Lead actress Cynthia Erivo has hinted at a more serious tone for the film, describing it as “equally as meaningful” as the first installment. The story is expected to explore timely themes of personal transformation and truth.
Despite being overlooked in the Oscar nominations for Best Director, Chu remains enthusiastic about the project. He even joked during his acceptance speech about eventually winning an Oscar, demonstrating his continued passion for the film.
The sequel follows the success of the first “Wicked” film, which debuted on November 22, 2024, and has already received significant awards season attention. Chu emphasized the collaborative effort, stating that the project “deserves to be seen” and praised the thousands of crew members who brought the magical world to life.
“We went back into the cut and realized they’re really paying attention to every detail,” Chu explained, highlighting the meticulous approach to storytelling that has become a hallmark of the “Wicked” film series.
