Selena Gomez delivered a surprise to her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short after both missed the Screen Actors Guild Awards in February. While on a break from filming the Hulu series’ upcoming fifth season, Gomez presented them with their SAG trophies on set, joined by series co-creator John Hoffman and actor Michael Cyril Creighton.
“And the SAG Award goes to Steve Martin and Martin Short!” Gomez announced as she walked onto the set. Martin and Short, who won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, reacted with humor. Martin admired the trophy, noting it was his first SAG Award, while Short jokingly collapsed under its weight before launching into a mock acceptance speech. “I would like to thank the Academy and everyone in the crew whose names … I just don’t know,” he quipped.
Short also won his first individual SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. He was absent from the ceremony after contracting Covid-19 following an appearance at SNL50. “The honor of being in Only Murders in the Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given,” he said in a statement. “The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so much.”

Martin also missed the event due to a prior commitment. Gomez accepted the ensemble award on behalf of the cast, joined by Creighton, Molly Shannon, Richard Kind, and Kumail Nanjiani. “We never win! This is so weird! Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care,” she joked during her speech. “Thank you to Marty and Steve for helping raise me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody, the writers, everyone deserves this. I take it home for all of us, and I’m bringing this back to New York for season five.”
Gomez later shared her excitement on Instagram, writing, “After four seasons we got our first award as a cast!!! Steve, Marty, you deserve this more than I do. You guys have shaped the character I play on our show. Last night was one I will never ever forget.” She also thanked Hulu, the SAG Awards, and the show’s crew.
