The stars of HBO Max’s breakout hockey romance Heated Rivalry say the show’s explicit sex scenes are easier to shoot than the bruising action on the ice, even as they face intense scrutiny over their private lives. In a new interview with Deadline, leads Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie described the hockey work as the real strain, comparing the physical toll of repeat plays and falls to the comparatively controlled environment of intimacy scenes.
The comment lands as Heated Rivalry cements itself as a global streaming hit. Adapted from Rachel Reid’s 2019 novel, the six-part Canadian series follows NHL stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov through years of professional rivalry and a secret romance, first produced for Crave and now rolling out weekly on HBO Max.
Sex is central to the show’s appeal and its production. Actor François Arnaud, who plays veteran star Scott Hunter in episode three, recently revealed he and co-star Robbie G.K. spent “about two days” filming sex scenes that did not all make the cut, describing the process as carefully choreographed, “sweet” and designed to feel private rather than performative. He praised intimacy coordinator Chala Hunter for creating a set that felt structured yet freeing.
The focus on intimacy has fed a second conversation: speculation around Williams and Storrie’s own sexualities. Their off-screen closeness, public affection and matching “sex sells” tattoos have sparked accusations of queerbaiting from some corners of social media.
Speaking to Deadline, Williams called that attention “the nature of celebrity” and said he has had to release control over how fans interpret his bond with Storrie. He stressed that he wants queer people telling queer stories, while also insisting on a degree of privacy and saying he will not stop expressing love for his co-star through physical affection. Storrie said he intends to keep his dating life to himself, arguing that the show and the community it serves matter more than labels placed on the actors.
Series creator Jacob Tierney has already pushed back on public demands that the leads define themselves. He has pointed out that asking about an actor’s sexuality in a casting room is illegal, and said his decisions were based on enthusiasm for the material and the intensity of their chemistry read, which he described as “perfection.”
Outside the set, the series is feeding a wider discussion about queer visibility in men’s hockey. Former NHL player Sean Avery recently argued that the show’s popularity could help clear space for the league’s first openly gay star, praising the drama’s unabashed sexuality even as he poked fun at its on-ice realism.
As Heated Rivalry surges across streaming and social media, the people making it find themselves juggling three demanding arenas: punishing hockey choreography, carefully engineered sex scenes and a fan culture eager to read personal meaning into every touch, tattoo and interview answer.
