Sony Pictures has hired Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland to write a long-dormant crossover film uniting Jamie Foxx’s bounty hunter Django with the masked vigilante Zorro — a project rooted in a 2014 comic series co-written by Quentin Tarantino and Eisner Award-winning artist Matt Wagner, published by Dynamite Entertainment in seven issues.
The project sits in early development. A director has not been attached, and Tarantino will not step behind the camera. He has, however, given his approval for the film to proceed at Sony — a studio where he is reportedly expected to make his eventual tenth and final directorial feature.
Helgeland is developing an original screenplay that builds on the comic’s premise, in which Django continues his work as a bounty hunter and forms a kinship with Don Diego de la Vega — the character played by Anthony Hopkins in Martin Campbell’s 1998 film The Mask of Zorro, where Don Diego passes the Zorro mantle to Alejandro Murrieta, played by Antonio Banderas. The new script is said to focus on a young Zorro.
In the original comic, the pair work together to free enslaved people and eventually confront a tyrannical Archduke of Arizona, with Django drawn into the fight after witnessing a different race oppressed under a cruel master. The film adaptation will chart its own course from there.
This marks the project’s second attempt at a screenplay. Tarantino previously courted comedian Jerrod Carmichael to write a draft, a version that was shelved for undisclosed reasons. Carmichael said in 2022 that the script was “incredible” and expressed frustration that Sony couldn’t find a path forward. The pandemic further stalled momentum, and the rights required clearing before production could restart.
Banderas has confirmed that Tarantino approached him at the 2020 Oscar ceremony. “He just came up to me,” Banderas said, recalling his reaction: “In your hands? Yeah, man!” Neither Foxx nor Banderas has formally signed on.
Helgeland brings strong genre credentials. He won an Academy Award for adapting L.A. Confidential and received a nomination for Mystic River. He also wrote and directed the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 and the Kray twins film Legend.
Tarantino has not directed a feature since Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019. His screenplay for The Adventures of Cliff Booth — a sequel starring Brad Pitt, directed by David Fincher — is set for a Netflix release later this year. His stage debut, a British farce called The Popinjay Cavalier, opens on the West End in 2027.
