Olivia Rodrigo steps into a new role Saturday night — host — as she takes the Saturday Night Live stage for the third time, pulling double duty on Season 51’s 18th episode at Studio 8H. The 23-year-old three-time Grammy winner’s hosting debut is timed to maximize momentum ahead of her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which drops June 12.
Rodrigo confirmed on The Tonight Show that she will perform “Drop Dead,” the album’s lead single, and teased a second musical performance of a song no one has heard yet. The combination of a known track and a world premiere live on NBC positions the episode as a genuine event for fans, not simply a promotional stop.
Rodrigo also revealed that guitarist Jack White, who performed on the show last month, secretly hid an encouraging note inside her dressing room ahead of the episode. She said she received a cryptic text from him reading “Look up” — and that she tore the room apart searching for it. “I love Jack White. He’s, like, my hero,” she told Fallon.
Of hosting, Rodrigo told Fallon, “It’s always been a huge dream of mine, and so I’m so grateful that Lorne let me do it. Getting to be there with all of the funniest people on the planet and just having fun and making jokes all day — it’s literally a dream.”
She arrives with more preparation than a typical first-time host. Beyond two previous musical guest appearances in 2021 and 2023, she has a background in television acting — from Bizaardvark to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series — and briefly appeared in a 2023 SNL sketch during the Adam Driver episode.
Rodrigo is the third performer this season to pull double duty, following Sabrina Carpenter in October 2025 and Harry Styles in March 2026. The potential for a Carpenter cameo has circulated online given the two pop stars’ shared history and the show’s habit of leaning into fan-driven storylines.
The episode kicks off the final three-show sprint of Season 51, with Matt Damon hosting May 9 and Will Ferrell closing out the season on May 16, joined by Paul McCartney as musical guest.
