Prime Video’s ‘Carrie’ Sets October Premiere, Debuts First Trailer

Showrunner Mike Flanagan says his eight-episode take on Stephen King's classic trades nostalgia for a story built around modern bullying and social media.

Prime Video revealed the first trailer for its new “Carrie” series on Saturday and set a premiere date of October 7, giving fans of Stephen King’s debut novel their first extended look at a project that has been building anticipation since it entered production.

Showrunner Mike Flanagan unveiled the footage during a Comic-Con International panel in San Diego, where he framed the show as a departure from prior takes on the material rather than a retread. Flanagan pointed to Brian De Palma’s 1976 film as untouchable ground he had no interest in revisiting, arguing instead that the five decades since King wrote the book demanded a different lens.

His version leans into contemporary anxieties, including online harassment, viral humiliation and the mental toll of growing up inside a smartphone. Flanagan said he brought high schoolers into the writers’ room to describe their own experiences with bullying and social pressure, material he used to shape Carrie White’s arc.

Summer H. Howell, chosen for the lead role after more than a thousand actors auditioned, plays Carrie opposite Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret. The ensemble includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti and Matthew Lillard. The teaser traces Carrie through isolation, bullying and a viral scandal before building to the prom night sequence that has defined every previous adaptation, ending on the telekinetic outburst and fire that made the story iconic.

King’s novel, published in 1974, spent 14 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold in translation across more than 35 languages worldwide. Despite a 1976 film, a 1999 sequel, a television movie and a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz, this marks the first time the story has been adapted into a series. King serves as an executive producer.

All eight episodes will drop simultaneously on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. The announcement landed on a crowded Comic-Con weekend that also saw the streamer confirm a release date for its “Blade Runner 2099” series, part of a broader push by Amazon to plant genre franchises across its slate ahead of the fall viewing season.
