Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic has become the biggest global opening of his career, and in a new interview, the director says the film pulled together threads that have run through his filmography for more than two decades. “The Odyssey,” Nolan’s thirteenth feature and the first narrative film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, opened to $264 million worldwide, topping his previous records and pushing his career box office total past $6.2 billion.
Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter that horror sequences woven into the film, drawn from Odysseus’ encounters with monsters and supernatural threats, have left him hungry to make a horror movie outright. He said the genre demands an exceptional central idea rather than technical showmanship, pointing to Brian De Palma’s “Obsession” as an example of concept-driven horror done right.
The director also connected the film’s emotional core to a recent change in his personal life. Nolan adopted his first dog a few years ago as his children left for college, and he said the experience shaped his approach to a pivotal scene involving Odysseus’ aging hunting dog, calling the film “the ultimate dog movie” in hindsight.
Nolan drew explicit parallels between Odysseus and Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer, noting that both men wrestle with guilt over unleashing forces beyond their control, the Trojan Horse in one case and the atomic bomb in the other. He said thematic echoes across his films tend to emerge only after production wraps rather than through deliberate design.
The film’s rollout was not without turbulence. Casting decisions, including Elliot Page as the soldier Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, drew sustained criticism from some corners of social media over historical accuracy and identity, prompting the production’s official accounts to restrict comments during the promotional run.
Nolan has defended his choices publicly, saying he prioritized performance and thematic resonance over literal fidelity to physical descriptions in the source text. Reviews from critics have been largely favorable regardless, with the film earning comparisons to Nolan’s most ambitious prior work.
Nolan also confirmed plans to re-release “The Prestige” next year for its 20th anniversary, including new 70mm prints struck from the original 35mm anamorphic photography.
