‘Neuromancer’ Trailer Debuts, Sets January Premiere on Apple TV

Apple TV finally gave fans a first look at “Neuromancer” Saturday, releasing a trailer and premiere date for its adaptation of William Gibson’s genre-defining 1984 novel during a Comic-Con panel in San Diego. The series, starring Callum Turner as hacker-for-hire Case, arrives Jan. 22 with its first two episodes, then rolls out weekly through a March 19 finale across a ten-episode season.

Gibson’s novel has resisted adaptation for four decades despite its outsized influence on science fiction. The book introduced the term “cyberspace,” became the first novel to sweep the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards, and helped establish cyberpunk as a genre that shaped everything from “The Matrix” to “Ghost in the Shell.” Yet a parade of filmmakers, including Chris Cunningham, Vincenzo Natali and “Deadpool” director Tim Miller, attempted and abandoned their own versions over the years, largely defeated by the novel’s dense slang, sprawling cast and abstract virtual-reality setting.

Apple’s version follows Case as he gets pulled into a heist after losing his ability to jack into cyberspace, a job that keeps him tethered to the criminal underworld he had hoped to escape. The footage shown at Comic-Con leaned into the story’s Japanese-inflected, neon-lit setting, blending samurai-influenced visuals with the polished effects work and stylized violence fans have come to expect from prestige genre television. Graham Roland serves as showrunner, with J.D. Dillard directing the pilot episode.

The ensemble cast includes Briana Middleton, Joseph Lee, Mark Strong, Clémence Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, Max Irons, André De Shields, Isabella Pappas and Dane DeHaan. Apple has not said whether it plans to continue the story into Gibson’s two follow-up novels, “Count Zero” and “Mona Lisa Overdrive,” though the source material exists if the show finds an audience.

The announcement extends Apple TV’s already heavy footprint at this year’s Comic-Con, where the streamer also debuted new footage from its “Matchbox: The Movie,” starring John Cena, and pushed a slate of genre titles across a marathon Hall H presentation.
