Sony Pictures dropped its last trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” this week, arming fans with fresh combat footage between Tom Holland’s web-slinger and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk before the film opens in theaters on July 31.
The preview opens by revisiting the fallout from 2021’s “No Way Home,” in which Peter Parker erased himself from the memories of everyone he loves, including Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds. Four years later, Parker fights crime alone in a city that no longer recognizes him. That isolation, paired with mounting physical strain from his powers, triggers what the studio describes as a dangerous transformation his body may not survive.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton fills out the threat list with familiar faces: Michael Mando’s Scorpion, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, and a band of masked fighters from The Hand all appear in the footage, alongside a brutal clash between Spider-Man and the Hulk that Ruffalo’s character seemingly loses control over.
Newcomer Sadie Sink remains the trailer’s biggest question mark. Marvel has withheld her character’s identity from every piece of marketing, though mounting speculation among fans and industry insiders points to Jean Grey, the telepathic X-Men founder. Sink herself has dodged the topic in interviews, joking only that she can confirm she does not play Aunt May.
Sony chairman Tom Rothman called the film among the studio’s most ambitious productions during a CinemaCon presentation earlier this year, adding that Holland delivers his strongest performance yet in the role. Screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers penned the script, with Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige producing.
The rollout builds on a marketing campaign that already broke records. The film’s first trailer pulled in more than 700 million views within its opening day in March, becoming the fastest movie trailer to reach that mark, then crossed a billion views within four days.
Holland’s cast includes returning players Ruffalo, Bernthal and Mando, plus newcomers Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colón-Zayas and Marvin Jones II. The actor recently confirmed his marriage to Zendaya, adding real-life resonance to the on-screen reunion between Parker and MJ that anchors much of the new footage.
