Disney gave fans their first real look at “The Bluey Movie” Friday night at D23, unveiling a teaser trailer and poster for the CG-animated feature nearly a year after the film’s August 6, 2027 release date was first confirmed. The footage played to a packed Honda Center crowd that responded with what one reporter on the scene described as an outsized reaction for a brief clip.
The teaser shows Bluey and her younger sister, Bingo, playing “Keepy Uppy,” their signature game of batting a red balloon to keep it from touching the ground. They fail. The moment carries the show’s familiar mix of humor and warmth, rendered for the first time in a new three-dimensional animation style built specifically for the big screen, a shift from the flatter look of the Disney Junior and Disney+ series. Disney leaned into the game’s popularity by having fans in the arena play their own round of Keepy Uppy with balloons distributed for the occasion.
Details on the plot remain thin. Disney’s official description says the film unfolds over “an action-packed day when a big surprise changes everything” for Bluey and her family, without elaborating further. Series creator Joe Brumm wrote and directs the film, having stepped back from the television series to focus on the movie, though the show will continue without him. Richard Jeffery, who directed multiple seasons of the series, co-directs. Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack return to voice Chilli and Bandit, the parents of the blue heeler family at the center of the franchise.
The film arrives on the strength of extraordinary viewership numbers. “Bluey” was the most-streamed title of any kind in the United States in 2025, including adult programming, logging more than 45 billion streaming minutes according to Nielsen data. Ludo Studio produces the movie in collaboration with BBC Studios, with Walt Disney Studios handling theatrical distribution.
Disney is set to reveal additional details this weekend, with a dedicated “Bluey: The Movie” panel scheduled at D23 featuring Brumm and members of the Ludo Studio team.
