Netflix put a real man inside a billboard 30 feet above one of Los Angeles’s busiest intersections, and passersby have spent the past few days watching him live there. The company confirmed in a press release that a performer is “living” inside a fully furnished living room built directly into a billboard at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Selma Avenue in Hollywood.
The stunt runs from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8, promoting “The Last House,” a sci-fi thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as parents sealed inside their home with two young children, fighting to survive an unexplained outside threat while their resources run out.
Netflix describes the installation as an eerie echo of the film’s plot. Inside his enclosed set, the performer has been spotted sipping coffee and gazing out the window, at times holding up handwritten signs reading “What’s going on?” and “Stuck in here.” He has also used binoculars to survey the view over the Sunset Strip. Netflix said he communicates with commuters and pedestrians below using a whiteboard, carrying on as close to a normal routine as the space allows. Beneath the bay window built into the display, a line of copy asks passersby, “How long can you survive?”

“The Last House” was directed by Louis Leterrier from a script by Matthew Robinson and began production under the working title “11817.” Leterrier previously directed “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, the director said the film challenges the notion of a safe haven by turning a family home into hostile territory, where survival depends on unity, describing it as an ordinary family’s worst nightmare that exposes how fragile a sense of security really is.
The film premiered on Netflix on Aug. 7. The billboard stunt has drawn attention partly because it unfolded during a heat wave gripping Southern California, adding an unplanned layer of realism to the performer’s confinement.
