“Alone at Dawn,” Ron Howard’s war drama starring Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway, has locked in a Christmas 2027 theatrical release through Amazon MGM Studios, ending months of uncertainty about when the long-delayed film would reach audiences.

The film dramatizes the story of John Chapman, an Air Force combat controller who died in Afghanistan on March 4, 2002, after saving 23 fellow soldiers during a firefight, an act of sacrifice that led to a posthumous Medal of Honor nearly two decades later. Driver plays Chapman, while Hathaway takes on the role of an intelligence officer whose work helped drive the long campaign to secure his recognition. The project is adapted from the nonfiction book by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz, with a screenplay credited to Michael Russell Gunn, building on earlier drafts from Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog.

Production wrapped in February after a three-month shoot spanning Hungary and Maryland, and the film’s absence from this fall’s festival circuit had fueled speculation that Amazon MGM was holding it for a bigger awards-season push rather than a quieter late-2026 rollout. That speculation proved accurate. Early reactions from a private screening this summer praised both leads, with Driver, a former Marine, drawing particular attention for a role that observers described as a natural fit given his own service background.

The cast also includes Betty Gilpin, Jon Bass and Lauren Hutton, along with Jonathan Ajayi, Austin Amelio, Rohan Campbell, Henry Garrett and Sam Nelson Harris in supporting roles added last November. Howard directs through his continuing first-look deal with Amazon MGM alongside producing partner Brian Grazer at Imagine Entertainment, a relationship that has already yielded titles including “Eden.”

The Christmas date places “Alone at Dawn” squarely in awards contention for 2027, giving Amazon MGM a prestige entry built around one of the more decorated true stories of recent military history. It also marks the first onscreen pairing of Driver and Hathaway, two actors whose overlapping but previously unconnected careers have each been defined by frequent collaborations with major auteur directors.
