Sony Pictures has released the first poster for “Jumanji: Open World,” and it puts the franchise’s four stars on a snowy city street, jostled by ostriches, under a tagline that frames the film as the last game.
The studio unveiled the artwork Monday. Its caption reads “Two worlds collide. One final game,” and describes the film as arriving exclusively in theaters this Christmas. The design stacks Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Kevin Hart vertically, with ostriches crowding in from both sides on a street dressed for the holidays. Johnson shared it on Instagram.
Jake Kasdan returns to direct. Johnson plays Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Hart plays Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Black plays Professor Shelly Oberon and Gillan plays Ruby Roundhouse. The supporting cast includes Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Rhys Darby, Nick Jonas and Danny DeVito. The movie opens Dec. 25.
The story sends the game’s heroes out of their console. In the first trailer, released over the summer, the four leads appear in the real world as stiff versions of their avatars. The ostriches have precedent: the previous film, “Jumanji: The Next Level,” ended with a herd of them loose outside a restaurant.
The “final” label has stirred the most conversation. Sony presents the film as the last installment of the rebooted trilogy, and the farewell-style tagline has left some fans dreading the end of a series they have followed for years. The wording is narrower than it sounds. It closes the Johnson-led trilogy, not every possible future Jumanji adaptation. Outlets also count the series differently: one called the movie the fourth and final entry, going back to the 1995 original.
The cast has promoted the film since spring. Johnson, Hart and Black presented the first footage and announced the title at CinemaCon, where Black said he had “never had more fun” on a movie. The poster arrives about two months before opening day, as Sony builds a holiday release around the reunion.
