Taylor Swift walked onto the “Saturday Night Live” stage Saturday to play therapist to Dakota Johnson, interrupting the host’s opening monologue in a bit that brought the two friends’ recent collaboration to live television.
Johnson, hosting for the third time on the eve of her 37th birthday, opened the second episode of the show’s 52nd season with jokes about her dating history. She noted two very public breakups with musicians since her last stint and said the experience cost her nothing in friendships. Then she introduced “my literal therapist.”
Swift arrived to correct her. “I’m not your therapist,” she said. The singer, 36, described the arrangement as one-sided. Johnson turns up at her house weekly with an empty wine bottle, flops on the couch and overshares, Swift said, while Swift’s only reply is that it sounds crazy. When Swift said the night was getting late, Johnson cheered at the prospect of a sleepover. Swift closed the bit by saying she sends her guest home with a Pedialyte and a ride from her security team.
The monologue also winked at Swift’s marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Johnson listed places tied to her romantic misadventures, including Cleveland, and Swift answered with a “woo-woo,” according to Billboard. Johnson ended with a joke that her habit of dating musicians saves women money on antidepressants.
Swift returned at the end of the broadcast with a birthday cake for the host.
The appearance followed days of shared publicity. Swift directed the music video for “Patient Zero,” in which Johnson and Colin Farrell play a couple whose marriage is falling apart and Swift appears as a spectral figure. The clip premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards, where Johnson introduced Swift as she accepted the first Artist Director Honors award. Swift released an expanded eight-minute cut of the video on Apple Music earlier Saturday.
The cameo overshadowed the episode’s musical guest, Turnstile, the Baltimore hardcore band that played two sets. Johnson also has a film to promote. “Verity” opens in theaters within days.
