Three weekends in, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie shows no signs of losing altitude. The Universal/Illumination sequel earned $35 million domestically in its third weekend, pushing its North American total to $355 million, a steady performance for a film that opened to blockbuster numbers earlier this month and has faced no serious competition since.
The film has now grossed $747.5 million worldwide against a $110 million production budget, making it the highest-grossing film of 2026. That figure carries an important asterisk: Japan, where the film opens next weekend timed to the country’s Golden Week holiday, is expected to add another $100 million or more to the total. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie earned close to $102 million in Japan alone.
The film opened April 1 and set the record for the biggest global opening of 2026, becoming the only animated franchise with two films opening to over $350 million worldwide. Its five-day domestic haul reached $190 million, the best opening in 2026 for any film. The sequel received an A- CinemaScore — matching the original’s A — and its 48% second-weekend drop was considered modest for a blockbuster of this scale.
The cast brought back Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser, with newcomers Brie Larson as Rosalina, Donald Glover voicing Yoshi, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary held exceptionally well in second place with $20 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $285 million and worldwide gross to $573 million. The Phil Lord and Chris Miller sci-fi film returned to IMAX screens Friday for one final week ahead of upcoming competition.
The weekend’s only major new entry was Warner Bros.’ Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which opened to $13 million from 3,304 locations on a reported $22 million budget. A C+ CinemaScore and a 45% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes suggest limited staying power against stronger family competition in coming weeks.
