Marlon and Shawn Wayans have given fans of their 2004 cult comedy White Chicks the closest thing to a green light they’ve had in two decades — with a catch. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the brothers confirmed they want to make a sequel, but its fate rides entirely on how Scary Movie 6 performs when it opens in theaters on June 5.
“I’ll put it this way: we’re game,” Marlon said, while Shawn added plainly, “If this movie does well, a White Chicks 2 can happen.”
The announcement arrives as the Wayans family stages its most significant Hollywood comeback in years. Scary Movie 6 reunites Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans on the franchise for the first time in 18 years. The trio co-wrote the film and served as producers, with most of the original cast returning, including Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Anthony Anderson. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures.
The original White Chicks earned over $113 million worldwide against a $37 million budget, landing a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and several Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture. Critics were largely unkind at the time, but audiences kept watching. A sequel was announced by Sony as far back as 2009 before being quietly shelved. The film has since built an devoted following, and Marlon acknowledged the intensity of fan demand in the Entertainment Tonight interview. “These people don’t play about White Chicks,” he said. “They’re like, ‘Are you gonna do it or not?'”
The physical demands of the original remain a sticking point. Marlon previously described spending seven hours in makeup daily before working a 14-hour shoot, leaving the cast with only about three hours of turnaround each night.
White Chicks 2 is not the only sequel the brothers are eyeing. Marlon has also teased a follow-up to their 1996 parody Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, saying, “If Scary Movie does well like we hope it does, we’ll be back real hard next with White Chicks 2 and Don’t Be a Menace 2.”
In a 2022 interview, Marlon described the sequel as something that would explore gender and race relations in the 21st century, saying the original “has a lot of meat to it and explores everything, like class, gender, race.” He has defended the film’s humor consistently, arguing that comedy requires room to take risks.
For now, everything hinges on June 5. The Wayans brothers have, in effect, handed the decision to audiences.
