Disney gave fans their first glimpse of live-action “Tangled” Friday night at D23, confirming a March 31, 2028 theatrical release and unveiling brief footage that sent the Honda Center crowd into cheers. The teaser opens on a shot of Rapunzel’s long blonde hair spilling down a set of stone medieval steps before the camera rises to reveal actress Teagan Croft in the role.
The clip then cuts to Kathryn Hahn, stepping out from a darkened doorway in costume as the villainous Mother Gothel and calling out “Rapunzel!” The moment drew what one reporter in attendance described as the loudest reaction of the night, a payoff for a casting choice fans had campaigned for since Hahn’s name first circulated for the part. Hahn later took the stage to address that campaign directly, thanking supporters and describing Gothel as “stunning, hilarious, fab, kind, generous to a fault,” before adding that her controlling behavior stems from genuine devotion.

Milo Manheim, who plays the thief Flynn Rider opposite Croft, appeared with her in a prerecorded video message sent from the film’s production base in Spain, where shooting began in June. Croft told the D23 audience the cast has been filming in beautiful locations across the country, and Manheim promised additional footage would follow in the coming months.
The film adapts the 2010 animated original, following Rapunzel’s escape from an isolated tower with Flynn Rider’s help after years of confinement. Diego Luna has joined the cast in a role Disney has not yet disclosed. Michael Gracey, who directed “The Greatest Showman” and “Better Man,” helms the adaptation from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor, with Kristin Burr producing.
The project’s path to the screen has not been entirely smooth. Disney first reported development on the remake in December 2024 before pausing it the following spring after “Snow White” underperformed at the box office, pulling in $69 million domestically. Hahn’s casting was confirmed in March, following Scarlett Johansson’s earlier departure from the role due to scheduling conflicts.
