In a nostalgic treat for retro gaming enthusiasts, Bungie’s seminal 1994 first-person shooter, Marathon, has made its way to Steam, and the best part? It’s completely free to play on PC and Mac. Developed by Aleph One Developers, a team dedicated to preserving and modernizing classic games, “Classic Marathon” brings the beloved title to modern hardware, powered by the Aleph One engine.
For those unfamiliar with this iconic piece of gaming history, Marathon takes players on an interstellar adventure aboard the UESC Marathon, a massive colony ship on a mission to colonize the fourth planet in the Tau Ceti system. Players assume the role of a security guard tasked with defending the ship and its crew against a hostile alien force, the S’pht, who have launched an attack on the Tau Ceti system.
What sets Marathon apart is its unique narrative delivery, presenting the story through computer terminals featuring crew logs, historical documents, and communications with the three AIs that run the ship. This innovative storytelling approach was groundbreaking for its time and contributed to the game’s cult following.
While staying true to the original’s foundational gameplay, Classic Marathon introduces several enhancements for a modern gaming experience. These include optional widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering and perspective, positional audio, and smooth 60+ fps interpolation. However, purists can choose to play the game in its original form by disabling these features.
The release of Classic Marathon on Steam not only makes the game accessible to a wider audience but also serves as a precursor to the upcoming revivals of Marathon 2 and Marathon: Infinity, which Aleph One Developers are currently working on, with plans to release them on the platform at a later date.
Fans of the Marathon series have even more to look forward to, as Bungie itself has a new Marathon game in development. Deviating from the traditional first-person shooter formula, this upcoming title is a PvP extraction shooter where players take on the role of cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches and infamy.
Slated for release on PC and PlayStation 5 with full cross-play and cross-save support, this new Marathon installment promises to breathe fresh life into the iconic franchise.
As the gaming community celebrates the revival of this classic, it’s evident that Bungie’s Marathon series has left an indelible mark on the industry, and its return to the spotlight is a testament to its enduring legacy.
