In a devastating blow to the gaming industry, Lightforge Games, a studio founded by former Blizzard and Epic Games developers, has announced that it will be laying off the majority of its staff and pausing development on its highly anticipated project, ORCS. The studio cited an inability to secure the necessary funding to complete the ambitious social TTRPG-inspired sandbox RPG as the primary reason for this difficult decision.
Lightforge Games was founded in 2021 with the goal of creating a cross-platform social experience that would combine the creative elements of Minecraft with the open-ended storytelling of tabletop RPGs. Project ORCS promised to offer players an unprecedented level of freedom in creating worlds and telling stories, garnering significant attention and praise within the gaming community.
The studio’s CEO and co-founder, Matt Schembari, acknowledged the immense challenges faced by the team, stating, “We always knew this was an ambitious long-shot of a project, but we pursued it because of a shared passion in collaborative storytelling and with a fearlessness to do something different both as a project and as a studio.”
Despite securing $15 million in funding in 2022 from notable investors such as NetEase, co-founders of Oculus and Twitch, and even popular streamer Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys, Lightforge Games found itself unable to secure the additional funding required to complete Project ORCS. The studio has been regularly meeting with potential investors and publishers, but their efforts have ultimately proved futile.
As a result of this setback, Lightforge Games will be “sunsetting” its official social channels and Discord server, while retaining a “skeleton crew” to explore viable options for the studio’s future. The decision to lay off the majority of the staff is a heartbreaking one, especially considering the talent and experience assembled by the studio, which boasted former developers from industry giants like Blizzard and Epic Games.
This unfortunate news serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by independent game developers, even those with substantial financial backing and pedigree. The gaming industry has witnessed a wave of closures and layoffs in recent years, with an estimated 9,500 jobs lost in the first half of 2023 alone, according to independent trackers.
As Lightforge Games grapples with this setback, the gaming community awaits further updates on the studio’s future and the potential revival of Project ORCS. For now, the fate of this ambitious project remains uncertain, leaving fans and industry observers alike to ponder the inherent risks and uncertainties that accompany even the most promising of endeavors.
