A new documentary premiering on HBO Max gives fans of the iconic TV series “The Sopranos” a rare glimpse into its creation. Titled “Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos,” the film delves into the inspirations and creative process of show creator David Chase. Through behind-the-scenes clips and interviews with the cast and crew, it explores how Chase drew from his own life to develop one of TV’s most influential dramas.

Chase himself discusses how his complicated relationship with his mother influenced Tony Soprano’s character. The documentary hints at the dynamic between Chase and actor James Gandolfini, who played mob boss Tony. Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco, Steven Van Zandt, and Drea de Matteo also look back on their roles.

“The Sopranos” transformed television when it premiered in 1999 on HBO. As producer Terence Winter notes, other networks rejected it due to its dramatic crime genre. But under Chase’s meticulous guidance, its nuanced portrayal of Tony’s family and business lives became hugely popular. Even its controversial ending remains discussed by fans.

After 25 years, “Wise Guy” gives audiences an inside look at how Chase crafted the acclaimed series. It sheds light on his creative process and the real-life events giving the show its depth. With rare footage and candid cast interviews, the documentary offers an unprecedented examination of “The Sopranos” legacy as one of TV’s most groundbreaking dramas.
