The beloved MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV (“FF14”) is making its way to mobile devices in China, with Square Enix and Tencent securing approval from regulators to launch the game by August 2024. This announcement is a major win for fans of the massively popular franchise and underscores China’s booming demand for big-budget games on smartphones and tablets.
FF14 has captured the imaginations of 15 million players worldwide since launching in 2013 for PC and PlayStation platforms. Insiders note this mobile version will allow the game’s epic storytelling and cooperative multiplayer to reach entirely new audiences. However, market analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners stresses the mobile FF14 will stand alone rather than directly porting characters from the main storyline.
I believe this is the first official confirmation of a Final Fantasy XIV Mobile game?
The title is being developed by Tencent's Lightspeed Studios and Square Enix. It's expected to be a standalone MMORPG separate from the PC game.

Nintendo is also entering China’s burgeoning mobile market through partnerships with Tecmo Koei and Tencent. Dynasty Warriors 8 and upcoming Switch titles Mario Golf and Paper Mario will supplement Marvel’s mobile roster including the anticipated multiplayer brawler Marvel Snap. Even the historically PC-only Rainbow Six franchise appears headed to smartphones through a rumored Tencent-published Six Mobile.
As China’s gaming population of over 680 million gravitates towards portable play, converting monumental console and PC hits to mobile could unlock massive commercial potential. FF14 director Naoki Yoshida acknowledges early technical troubles with the game’s latest Dawntrail expansion across platforms, reassuring fans of resolutions on the way. Mobile may introduce FF14 to a whole new continent of players and usher in an even brighter future for the long-running series.
