Emily Blunt’s Kids Unimpressed by Her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ Role

Actress reflects on enduring impact of "The Devil Wears Prada" as her children offer brutally honest critique

Emily Blunt recently revealed that her two daughters did not approve of her iconic role in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada. In a recent interview, the 41-year-old actress said that Hazel, 10, and Violet, 7, thought she was “the meanest person they’ve ever met” after watching her character Emily Charlton in the movie.

Charlton serves as the frazzled and high-strung assistant to the intimidating fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. Now approaching its 18th anniversary, the film remains a popular part of pop culture and is regularly quoted. However, Blunt’s daughters had a starkly negative reaction upon seeing their mother portray the acerbic character.

Despite the harsh criticism from her children, Blunt fondly remembers her experience making the comedy-drama. She recalled being a young actress for her breakout role and unaware of box office metrics. When the movie became a massive commercial success, grossing over $326 million worldwide, Blunt said she had to ask her agent if those numbers were good. The cast, including Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci, also had a great time during filming.

Though her daughters disliked seeing her in character, The Devil Wears Prada boosted Blunt’s career and earned Streep an Oscar nomination. While rumors circulate of a possible sequel in development, taking on the role of Emily Charlton again may not win approval from Blunt’s family at home. This humorous anecdote highlights the contrast between an actor’s on-screen image and their private life.
