Disney’s new live-action feature Moana is generating buzz, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson giving behind-the-scenes insights about his portrayal of the mythical demigod Maui.
In a recent Extra interview, Johnson addressed speculation about his character’s amazing physique, which leaked set images had spurred. Contrary to first thoughts about hard muscle training, the actor stated that his muscular appearance results from a complicated bodysuit.
“That suit took a long time to put on,” Johnson said. He was pleased when people assumed he had physically bulked up for the role, saying, “When you say, ‘You bulked up,’ that means you couldn’t tell.”
The costume transformation is no small accomplishment. Johnson stated it takes “a couple of hours daily” to finish the complex dressing process despite efforts to avoid paparazzi photography, set photos leaked, generating great public interest.
The live-action adaptation is set to premiere on July 10, 2026. Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia will play Moana, and Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original animated film, will serve as executive producer.
In other news, Disney Animation’s animated film Moana 2 will launch this week. The sequel has already launched excellently, earning the studio’s highest preview earnings of $13.8 million.
