The second season of Netflix’s “Squid Game” brings back K-pop star T.O.P. to the public eye, almost ten years after a marijuana incident in South Korea ended his career. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk praised T.O.P.’s courage in taking on a role that parallels his own contentious past.
Choi Seung-hyun, better known as T.O.P, plays Thanos (Player 230), a fallen rapper who is drug-addicted and playing in the show’s deadly games. In 2017, he was in a legal fight that led to a 10-month prison sentence suspended for marijuana use. This role is his first work in Korea since then. In South Korea, these crimes have harsh legal and social consequences.
Hwang told People magazine, “This is a comeback after quite a long break.” He was referring to T.O.P’s return and how important it was. “Particularly because he portrays a character that is a rapper and also someone who is on drugs, I feel that it took him a lot of guts to take on that role.”
The incident that hurt T.O.P.’s career had effects that went far beyond his legal problems. He was charged on June 5, 2017, and later taken to the hospital after taking too many prescription painkillers while he was in Seoul doing his required military service. Because of this, he was not allowed to work in the entertainment business for two years and was also not allowed to serve in the military.
After being found guilty, T.O.P. said he felt very bad about his actions. In an apology letter posted on YG Entertainment’s website, he wrote, “I have no excuses and deserve any kind of punishment.” I’m sorry and scared that I hurt everyone’s feelings so badly and that they can’t be fixed. This includes our members, my business, friends, and family.
Since then, Hwang has said nice things about T.O.P’s role in “Squid Game.” His words, “As a director, he performed very impressively, and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character,” made it sound like T.O.P.’s life experiences affected how he played the troubled Thanos.
Taking on this role is not only T.O.P’s professional comeback but also a brave choice because it shows struggles similar to his own. Critics and fans have praised his willingness to face these parallels as particularly brave.
Season 2 of “Squid Game” is now available on Netflix. This is a big deal because it marks T.O.P. ‘s return to Korean entertainment.
