Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White has premiered, drawing praise for its visuals, musical numbers, and lead performances. The film, directed by Marc Webb, reimagines the studio’s 1937 animated classic, with Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.
Early reactions highlight the film’s visual style and musical sequences. Variety film reporter Katcy Stephan described it as a “visual feast” and praised Zegler as “a shining supernova.” Christopher Rates It called the film one of Disney’s strongest live-action remakes in years, stating that Zegler “delivers such a magical performance.” Filmhounds editor Paul Klein appreciated the film’s musical elements but questioned the use of CGI for the seven dwarfs, calling the decision “baffling.”
The film follows Snow White as she is forced into the forest after the Evil Queen seizes control of her kingdom. With the help of the seven dwarfs, she works to reclaim what is hers. The screenplay expands Snow White’s role, emphasizing leadership rather than romance. Zegler previously addressed these updates, stating that Snow White “isn’t going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
The project has faced challenges leading up to its release. Zegler’s past remarks about the original film led to debates among Disney fans, and Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage criticized the choice to use CGI for the dwarfs instead of casting actors. Production delays also affected the film, with plans to begin filming in 2020 postponed until 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Promotional events have drawn attention to the dynamic between the two leads. Gadot made a solo appearance at a Disneyland event, posing with Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as classic Disney villains. Zegler was absent, leading to speculation about tensions between the co-stars. Sources pointed to differences in age and political perspectives as factors in their professional relationship, though neither actress has directly addressed the rumors.
Disney continues to develop more live-action adaptations, with Lilo & Stitch scheduled for release in May. Snow White opens in theaters on March 21.
