Robin Williams’ Kids Revive His Instagram to Fight “Rampant AI Abuse” of His Likeness

Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams say the newly active account will serve as a verified home for authentic photos and memories, countering years of synthetic recreations of their late father.

Robin Williams’ three children have reactivated their father’s Instagram account, dormant for 12 years, in a deliberate move to reclaim his image from the flood of AI-generated content circulating online.

Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams posted a joint statement Monday marking what would have been their father’s 75th year. “As we recognize what would be our Dad’s 75th year, we’re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives,” the statement read.

They described their goal as building a verified archive of authentic photos and videos, framing the account as a direct response to synthetic content spreading under his name. “As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care.”

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, elaborated in a separate story on her personal account, acknowledging that some fans might find the sudden activity jarring given the page’s long silence. “I’m sorry if anyone found Dad’s old page posting again to be triggering,” she wrote. “Believe me, I know it’s a little strange.”

She framed the revival as a practical countermeasure rather than a sentimental gesture, calling it one of the more effective tools she and her brothers have found to push back against what she described as unauthorized recreations of their father’s voice and image. “Might be a drop in the bucket, but we’re trying,” she added.

The move builds on years of public frustration from Zelda Williams, who has repeatedly condemned AI-generated tributes to her father as exploitative rather than affectionate. Last fall, she asked fans directly to stop sending her synthetic videos of him, arguing that reducing a person’s legacy to something that merely “looks and sounds like them” strips away the humanity of the work itself. Her objections date back further, to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, when she described hearing AI-generated versions of her father’s voice as “personally disturbing.”

Williams, who won an Academy Award for “Good Will Hunting” and starred in “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Good Morning, Vietnam,” died by suicide in 2014 at age 63. His will reportedly restricts commercial use of his image for 25 years following his death, a safeguard that has taken on new urgency as AI tools make convincing recreations easier to produce and distribute.
