Disney+ has reversed course on “Wonder Man,” canceling the Marvel Television comedy roughly four months after confirming it would return for a second season. The decision, first reported Thursday, leaves the eight-episode series finished after a single run despite strong reviews and an Emmy nomination for star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Abdul-Mateen addressed the news on Instagram, telling followers “word just dropped” about the cancellation before adding, “that’s life, right? Everything will shake out.” He thanked viewers who watched and shared the show, writing that it had “worked” and that this was his favorite part of the experience. He closed by nodding to his upcoming Emmy appearance, where he is nominated for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series alongside Steve Carell, Matthew Rhys, Jason Segel and Martin Short.
The writers’ room for a second season never opened, and the attached writers have been released to pursue other projects. Disney has not explained its reasoning publicly, and Marvel had not responded to requests for comment as of Saturday.
The cancellation caught much of Hollywood off guard. “Wonder Man” premiered in January to warm reviews, holding a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and generated 618 million minutes of viewing during its debut week, according to Nielsen. Disney announced the season 2 renewal in March, about two months after the show finished its initial run. Viewership dropped out of the platform’s top 10 titles in subsequent weeks, though the show kept its critical standing.
Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the series starred Abdul-Mateen as Simon Williams, an actor secretly gifted with superpowers, alongside Ben Kingsley as the returning Trevor Slattery. Cretton directed several episodes and was set to return for season two before the reversal. The cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.
People familiar with the matter say characters from the show remain available for future Marvel projects, leaving open the possibility that Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery could resurface elsewhere in the franchise even without a second season of their own.
