“Daredevil: Born Again” will conclude with its third season on Disney+, and the announcement arrives alongside word that showrunner Dario Scardapane has left the series in the middle of post-production, according to reporting confirmed by multiple outlets Monday. Marvel did not renew Scardapane’s contract, and it remains unclear who will oversee the season through its final stages.
The upcoming season, which wrapped filming roughly two months ago, will bring back Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock alongside Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, while adding Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones, who reprise Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist from Netflix’s earlier Marvel series and “The Defenders.” No premiere date has been set beyond a general 2027 window.
Scardapane’s departure is unusual in its timing. He joined the project after Marvel scrapped an earlier version of the show following the 2023 strikes, discarding scripts from original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord in favor of a tone closer to Netflix’s original “Daredevil.” That overhaul paid off: Season 2 became known for a late change to a major character’s fate, engineered largely in the edit, and Marvel Television leadership had pointed to the series as a potential recurring franchise rather than a limited run. Losing its principal creative voice during post-production means whoever finishes the season inherits scripts and footage shaped by someone no longer involved in shaping the final cut.
The ending also fits a broader pullback in Marvel’s streaming output. Sources have noted the show, despite strong reviews, never drew the audience Marvel had hoped for on Disney+, and the studio has been trimming the volume of series it greenlights. Marvel Television typically keeps between three and five live-action shows in active development, and “Born Again” was, until this week, the last confirmed live-action series on the slate.
That changed with news of a newly greenlit spy thriller referred to internally as “Zodiac,” which may draw on Jonathan Hickman’s comics work introducing the Zodiac organization, though several other interpretations of the name circulate among longtime readers. The series will follow “VisionQuest,” premiering Oct. 14, in Marvel’s 2027 release lineup.
