Netflix has ordered a second season of “Lock Upp,” the Indian reality series that traps celebrities in a mock prison, after a first run that climbed to the top of the streamer’s TV chart within two days of its June 27 debut.
Monika Shergill, Netflix India’s vice president of content, announced the renewal at FICCI Frames 2026. She confirmed that hosts Riteish Deshmukh and Farah Khan will return. “We are not letting our jailors go on leave,” she said. Netflix India also posted a teaser on social media Tuesday.
Producer Balaji Telefilms makes the show, which Ekta Kapoor created. Contestants live together behind bars, complete challenges, reveal personal secrets and face elimination by public vote. The format first aired in 2022 on ALTBalaji and MX Player with Kangana Ranaut as host, and Munawar Faruqui won that season. Netflix rebuilt it as “Lock Upp: Sach Yaa Sazaa.”
The numbers explain the quick renewal. The series stayed in Netflix’s top ten for seven straight weeks, according to Deadline’s account of the announcement, and drew viewers well beyond India, including in the UK, Australia, Canada and Pakistan. Shergill called it “appointment viewing overnight.” Netflix says viewers were drawn more by the personal drama than by the survival games, and that the show gave celebrities room to discuss subjects they rarely address and to confront past trauma.
Not everyone watched with approval. Many viewers complained that the Netflix version felt scripted and theatrical. Critics used the term “rage bait” and questioned whether the hosts and production team favored certain contestants. One commenter summed up the objection as too much acting and too little reality, pointing to Khan’s frequent shouting.
Kapoor said the next season will return audiences to a familiar world with new stories, personalities and surprises. Shergill promised many new surprises as well and said the goal is to recreate the “Netflix effect” of the first run.
Netflix has not named the cast for season two or set a premiere date.
