Sony Pictures has confirmed Alan Ritchson as a lead in its live-action Helldivers movie and pushed the release from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028.
Ritchson, star of Prime Video’s Reacher, joins the cast as one of the film’s titular soldiers, and it remains unclear if he will be the main character. His character defends Super Earth against an overwhelming onslaught of alien creatures and interstellar threats. Jason Momoa, the project’s original star, left earlier this year, and Deadline reported on September 18 that Ritchson was in talks to replace him. Sony’s announcement settles that question. Plot details remain under wraps.
Justin Lin, the Fast & Furious director, remains attached to helm the film. Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Lin, through Perfect Storm Entertainment, are producing.
The new date moves the film out of the holiday corridor and into summer, when studios release their biggest action titles. Sony announced the shuffle at Cinema United’s Fall Summit, after Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island claimed the Veterans Day weekend slot on November 11, 2027, because it goes into production first. Some read the move as a sign of studio confidence. Others see risk: June 2028 promises stiff competition, and the game’s popularity may cool in the 20 months before release.
The delay also solves a scheduling problem. Ritchson began production on Reacher season 5 in July, and the series aims for an annual release, which would have left him little room for a 2027 shoot. Amazon has renewed the show for a sixth season. The extra months give Lin time to build the movie around its new lead rather than race a fixed deadline.
Helldivers is the next film from Sony and PlayStation Productions since 2022’s Uncharted. It arrives amid a wave of game adaptations, including Resident Evil, Street Fighter and The Legend of Zelda. The original game launched in 2015, but its sequel, Helldivers 2, earned the franchise its film deal.
