Capcom is sticking with its plan to turn game franchises into films, merchandise and esports events. A November 2 investor report reaffirmed the strategy and cast the opening weekend of its Street Fighter movie as a success. The film took first place at the box office but missed expectations. It earned an estimated $31 million from 3,575 North American theaters and $20.1 million from 65 other markets, a $51.1 million global opening. Deadline reported that the studios had hoped for about $70 million. In Japan, Capcom’s home market, the film ranked fifth with $875,000.
Reviews split. Critics gave the film 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences 79%. Men over 35 made up nearly half of the opening crowd, a sign the film reached longtime players. Receipts reportedly fell 72% in the second weekend. The movie cost $82 million, financed jointly by Capcom and Legendary Entertainment, so it has not yet recouped its budget in theaters. Deadline cited people familiar with the project who expect ancillary revenue to make the numbers work in the end.
Capcom’s report leaned on its Single Content Multiple Usage strategy, first laid out in a 2023 integrated report: one popular property, many formats. The company said it will keep widening the reach of its game catalog that way and left room for more movies. Director Kitao Sakurai has said a sequel is being written, but the green light depends on how the first film performs.
Capcom has a recent benchmark to measure against. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, released September 18, opened to $60.1 million domestically, a franchise record, and sits just under $400 million worldwide as it reaches digital platforms this week. That film told an original story. Street Fighter stayed close to the games’ characters and fights.
The model has paid off before. Capcom says Netflix’s Devil May Cry series helped sell nearly 2 million copies of Devil May Cry 5, and executives told investors they want a similar lift from Street Fighter. Street Fighter 6 has passed 6 million sales, which gives the film a ready audience for any boost.
