Netflix Greenlights Live-Action Solo Leveling With Byeon Woo-seok

Netflix has ordered a Korean live-action adaptation of Solo Leveling, casting Byeon Woo-seok as fledgling hunter Sung Jin-woo and hiring directors Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo to steer the series, which was announced on 9 July and will stream worldwide. The show is being co-produced with Kakao Entertainment and Sanai Pictures, extending the companies’ January development pact into full production.

Chugong’s 2016 web novel has exploded into a global franchise—its webtoon boasts 14.3 billion views and the anime swept nine categories, including Anime of the Year, at the 2025 Crunchyroll Awards. Industry observers say that popularity all but guaranteed a live-action bid after the anime became Crunchyroll’s most-watched series on record.

Plot details match the source: an E-rank adventurer gains a leveling system that lets him surpass humanity’s mightiest fighters as interdimensional “Gates” unleash monsters across the world. Netflix promises “vivid characters [and] dynamic action sequences,” aiming to replicate the successes of Alice in Borderland and One Piece while avoiding the pitfalls that sank Cowboy Bebop.

Byeon Woo-seok, fresh from breakout turns in Lovely Runner and 20th Century Girl, is expected to drive interest beyond the property’s existing fan base, with social-media mentions of the casting topping 400 000 in 24 hours, according to analytics firm Social Blade. His involvement aligns with Netflix’s strategy of pairing rising Korean stars with big-ticket intellectual property to widen demographic reach.

The streamer has committed US $2.5 billion to Korean content over four years, citing a six-fold jump in global K-drama viewership, and analysts view Solo Leveling as flagship fantasy programming for that slate. While no release window is set, sources close to the production say filming is targeted for early 2026, positioning the series to arrive roughly a year after Season 2 of the anime.
