Infinity Castle’ Opens to Record ¥7.3 Billion, Threatens ‘Mugen Train’ Crown

Record attendance and premium‑format demand propel the first film in Demon Slayer’s finale trilogy toward a potential all‑time Japanese box‑office run.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle stormed Japanese cinemas on 18 July with a record‑shattering opening‑day gross of 1.64 billion yen (US$11.1 million). Over the Marine Day long weekend the total surged to 7.31 billion yen (≈US$49.6 million) from 5.16 million tickets, the biggest four‑day launch ever recorded in the territory. Sunday alone delivered 2.03 billion yen, setting a new single‑day benchmark for any film released in Japan. Premium formats also boomed: IMAX screens contributed US$3 million on day one and US$3.5 million across four days, both all‑time local highs.

Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore has argued that trusted franchises are “the engine of theatrical recovery,” a thesis borne out by the film’s momentum. Infinity Castle now eclipses the three‑day debut of 2020’s pandemic‑era juggernaut Mugen Train in yen terms and trails only Detective Conan: One‑eyed Flashback among 2025 releases to date. To dethrone Mugen Train’s historic 40 billion‑yen haul, however, observers say robust weekday holds and summer‑holiday repeat viewings will be essential.

The 155‑minute feature, produced by Ufotable and distributed domestically by Toho and Aniplex, is the first in a trilogy adapting the manga’s climactic Infinity Castle arc. International rollout begins in Southeast Asia on 12 August, with North America, the UK and India slated for 12 September under Sony’s Crunchyroll banner.

Early audience chatter hails the expanded fight choreography and new theme songs by Aimer and LiSA, calling the film “a spectacle that justifies the big screen”. Yet some fans and commentators question whether three movies can do justice to 66 manga chapters, warning of potential “franchise fatigue” if the finale stretches to 2029. Tracking data shows the picture running more than 30 percent ahead of Mugen Train at the same stage, with theatres in Tokyo adding midnight shows to meet demand. The next few weeks will reveal whether Tanjiro’s latest outing has the stamina to rewrite Japan’s box‑office history—again.
