Nathalie Baye, the French actress who built one of European cinema’s most distinguished careers across five decades — from François Truffaut’s Day for Night to Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can — died Friday evening at her home in Paris. She was 77.
Her family confirmed to Agence France-Presse that she had been suffering from Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects movement, cognition, and can cause hallucinations. She was reportedly diagnosed last summer.
Born July 6, 1948, in Mainneville, Normandy, Baye graduated from France’s national drama conservatory in 1972 and made her film debut that same year in Robert Wise’s Two People. What followed was a career that placed her at the center of French cinema’s most creative decades. She worked with Truffaut on Day for Night (1973), appeared in Jean-Luc Godard’s Every Man for Himself (1980), and earned wide recognition in The Return of Martin Guerre (1982). She won best actress at the 1999 Venice Film Festival for An Affair of Love and served on the Cannes jury in 1996.
Baye won four César Awards — France’s highest film honor — and received ten nominations over her career. Her crossover into English-language film came through Spielberg, who cast her as Paula Abagnale, mother of Leonardo DiCaprio’s con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., in Catch Me If You Can (2002), alongside Christopher Walken and Tom Hanks. Her most recent screen credit was Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), where she played Madame Montmirail alongside the late Maggie Smith.
French president Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on X, writing: “With her voice, her smile and her grace, she has been a constant presence in French cinema over the past few decades. She was an actress with whom we loved, dreamed and grew up.” CNC president Gaëtan Bruel described her talent as leaving its mark across every genre, from arthouse films to popular comedies.
Baye is survived by her daughter, actress Laura Smet — whom she had with French rock star Johnny Hallyday — who has gained international attention with a role in the upcoming season of The White Lotus.
