In a recent interview, actor Viggo Mortensen, best known for his iconic portrayal of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ trilogy, addressed the possibility of revisiting his role in the upcoming film ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.’ While Mortensen expressed his fondness for the character and openness to reprising the part, he emphasized that his involvement would hinge on whether the story aligns with the character’s essence and his age at the time of filming.

“I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot,” Mortensen shared with GQ. “I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

Slated for release in 2026, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is set to explore the previously untold tale of Aragorn and Gandalf’s pursuit of the treacherous Gollum during the twenty-year period after Frodo obtained the One Ring. While plot details remain scarce, the film promises to delve into the backstory of the intriguing Gollum/Sméagol character, as confirmed by director Andy Serkis, who will reprise his iconic motion-capture performance.

“The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Serkis explained. “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films.”

Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn, the heir to the throne of Gondor, was widely acclaimed for its depth and nuance. From his initial introduction as the enigmatic Strider to his eventual coronation as the rightful king, Aragorn’s journey resonated with audiences and embodied the essence of heroism and leadership.

While the prospect of Mortensen’s return to Middle-earth is tantalizing for fans, it is not without challenges. The actor, now 65 years old, acknowledges the need to assess whether his age aligns with the character’s timeline, as the men descended from Númenor age at a slower rate than ordinary humans.

Furthermore, the potential recasting of iconic roles such as Gandalf, previously brought to life by Sir Ian McKellen, and the late Bernard Hill’s portrayal of King Théoden, presents additional obstacles for the filmmakers.

Nonetheless, Peter Jackson, the visionary director behind the original trilogy, has expressed confidence in the decision to explore Gollum’s story, stating, “It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”

As anticipation builds for ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ Mortensen’s words offer a glimmer of hope for fans yearning to witness the return of Aragorn, the valiant ranger-turned-king. Whether Mortensen ultimately reprises his role or passes the mantle to a new actor, the enduring legacy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ saga continues to captivate audiences worldwide, ensuring that the journey through Middle-earth remains an epic adventure for generations to come.
