Despite Christian Whitehead, one of the key figures behind Sonic Mania, not being directly involved in the development of Sonic Superstars, the newest 2D addition to Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog franchise, he recently revealed an intriguing detail about the game’s physics system.

In a noteworthy move, Whitehead confirmed that the highly acclaimed physics system from Sonic Mania has been “fully transferred to modern 3D,” indicating that Sonic Superstars partially utilizes the Retro Engine graphics engine.

A comparison between the two titles showcases the striking similarity in Sonic’s inertia in the new game to that of classic Sonic games. Whitehead shared this exciting information in response to the comparison, stating, “I’ll have more to say on this when appropriate, but Mania’s physics have been fully ported to modern 3D.”

The Development Team

To the surprise of many, the studio entrusted with developing Sonic Superstars is none other than Arzest, led by Naoto Ohshima, the Japanese designer credited with creating Sonic himself.

In an interview, Iizuka shed light on the decision to collaborate with Ohshima, emphasizing his background in crafting the Classic Sonic experience. Iizuka stated, “What Ohshima brings to the table is his Classic Sonic background, having worked on Sonic 1 and Sonic CD. He knows how to make a real Classic Sonic game. Many people think that Ohshima solely designed Sonic and that was it, but in Sonic 1, he was not only responsible for character design but also contributed to level design. So, he possesses the firsthand experience of creating a Sonic game by actively participating in level design for the original game.”
