Focus Features’ biopic “Back to Black” is poised to bring the story of Amy Winehouse, one of the most celebrated and troubled musicians of the 21st century, to theaters across the United States on May 10, 2024. Starring Marisa Abela, known for her role in “Industry,” the film promises a raw and intimate portrayal of Winehouse’s ascent to fame.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, renowned for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and written by Matt Greenhalgh, “Back to Black” seeks to provide a unique perspective on Winehouse’s life. The duo, who previously collaborated on the John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy,” aims to depict Winehouse’s journey through her own eyes, offering an unfiltered look at the talent and turbulence that defined her career and personal life.

Joining Abela in the biopic are acclaimed actors Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, and Lesley Manville. Producers Alison Owen and Debra Hayward lead the project, with executive production from Nicky Kentish-Barnes, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin.
“Back to Black” has garnered support from the Amy Winehouse estate, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing. This collaboration ensures that the film will feature some of Winehouse’s most beloved songs, including hits like “Back to Black,” “Rehab,” “You Know I’m No Good,” and her iconic version of “Valerie.”
